Which is the better 1970s F Scott Fitzgerald adaptation?
Neither is a very good movie.
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!
Neither are great but THE LAST TYCOON is more entertaining and is the only time DeNiro and Nicholson shared a scene in any movie. Theresa Russell is also great and it has Robert Mitchum. The actors make that movie work and it helps that The Last Tycoon is an unfinished book so the producers had more freedom.
The 1974 Great Gatsby is an entertaining production but [a]It's too long, [b]They miscast Nick Carraway. I think Mia Farrow is the perfect Daisy and visually it's quite pretty but it's missing out on a lot of stuff. The Baz Luhrmann movie by comparison is a cheese-fest in production design as all Luhrmann but DiCaprio and Tobey's bond as Gatsby and Nick more than make up for the failure of the film.
