Excalibur #5 (February, 1989) was hilarious, especially since it let everyone know which team Lockheed plays for...

Kitty sure let the little guy have an earful, didn't she? (LOL):

I don't think Kitty ever formally used the codename "Ariel". As said above, she rejected it when Xavier suggested it and went right for Sprite.

Though she dismisses Ariel on panel immediately, the name did turn up in some promotional materials and products and most famously in the Graphic Novel GOD LOVES, MAN KILLS. So there must have been some behind the scenes shenanigans going on with deciding on the name.

I am also pretty sure she was listed as Ariel in the original Marvel Handbook series.

Upon closer examination, it appears that she took the name "Ariel" begrudgingly after graduating to full membership in the X-MEN and leaving behind her training outfit circa UNCANNY X-MEN #169, though she dislikes it enough to NOT encourage being called by her codename. Perhaps the change is meta-spurred by the introduction of Caliban of the Morlocks and his obsession with Kitty- referencing the characters Ariel and Caliban in Shakespeare's THE TEMPEST...

NOT modifying her Valerio Schiti GUARDIANS design into an X-Look stings a bit extra now that Schiti has given us all the designs for S.W.O.R.D.
