    Default Cover Contest 9/8 Thru 9/14 - I Spy

Thank you for your patience. Let's get to it.
    This week's topic is Spies.
Post a cover featuring a spy of some kind. Here's my entry:

    The Rules:
Post one (and only one) cover that fits the theme of this week's contest.
The cover must be from a published comic book, collected volume, or graphic novel.
Covers must be posted before voting begins.
Voting begins at 12 AM Tuesday and runs until 12 AM Wednesday PST.
Vote by posting the name in bold of the Poster whose cover best fits the theme or that you simply like the most. A vote need not be in bold, but it does make it easier to tally votes.
The winner of the contest is the entrant with the most votes after the voting period.
It's okay to discuss the covers but if you think someone's entry doesn't fit the theme or violates the rules don't argue it in the thread - simply don't vote for it.
Most importantly, remember that we're here to have fun. Enjoy!

Congratulations to worstblogever for a marvelous cover which has truly reached iconic status. Looking at the detail in the background and the use of whatever those crazy curvy lines are called put this as a powerful symbol of the character. And helped to cement Nick as arguably the biggest of the Bond inspired spies of the sixties.

As to what the captain has learned in this peak of the week, he has been reminded that the Bond influence on our view of spies is powerful, indeed. He has read that real spies resemble Drew Carey far more than they do any version of James Bond as spies need to blend in. Bond, like characters in My Cousin Vinny, does not "blend". Anyway, it's been a good week seeing the variety of covers, even if the preponderance are all pretty much Steranko Nick inspired.

Congrats, WBE. And thanks to foxley and seismic-2 for the votes.

To be honest, though, I was a bit tempted to go with Rob Liefeld's rendition of Ethan Hunt:

As funny as that is, I still think I made the right decision.

Although it worth noting, that Ian Fleming actually based many of Bond's characteristics on a Serbian double-agent named Duško Popov he knew during his time at MI6. In particular, he was promiscuous womanizer who courted women during his missions, including the French actress Simone Simon.

The physical description of Bond was given in the first novel in the series, Casino Royale, by Vesper Lynd: "Bond reminds me rather of Hoagy Carmichael, but there is something cold and ruthless." In case you don't remember just what "Stardust" songwriter, pianist, singer, and actor Hoagy Carmichael looks like (he was in lots of noir-ish detective movies and lots of TV Westerns), here he is:

I'll let you morph that image into one more nearly "cold and ruthless", as you wish.

Phil Noto did number of cool covers for the BW 2014 run. This one I thought was a lot of fun
