Duel was a made for TV movie, Spielberg's first theatrical film was Sugerland Express.

A sad one is Charles Laughton's Night of the Hunter, since he never made another.

A recent excellent film was Regina King's One Night in Miami. Though she had previously directed a lot of TV episodes.

Ordinary People and Dances With Wolves are probably unfairly maligned because they beat better Scorsese movies for Best Picture, but both are good films.

A few more I'd add are the time travel story Primer, Terms of Endearment, Closely Watched Trains and Easy Rider.

I think Richard Donner: The Omen. But I am not sure if it is his first feature. He directed A LOT of TV.

Seems like there was at least a film or two before that(allowing for that my years aren't fuzzy...)

At the very least, Salt And Pepper seems like would be a few years before that.

I didn't know he directed that Davis Jr, Lawford debacle. Off to IMDB for me.
