Is it a bad thing that Jean didn’t want to manipulate them right after they’d gone through a serious loss and she’d just extended her hand in friendship?

Makes her a decent person IMO plus if she got caught they would have been f*cked.

It doesn’t make her a bad person (and she wouldn’t have gotten caught), but she should have thought of telepathically cloaking the environment right away, which is not the same nor as intrusive as mindwiping. She has done this several times in the past. The only reason for her not doing so that I can think of is that she was too wrapped up in the formalities and cordialities, and by the time Lorna alerted her, the Avengers were already inside, which means they would have already seen everything. Still, I don’t find that particular moment, all to give Emma a mini-feat and moment, realistic nor consistent with Jean’s capabilities and expertise. At this point, I’m just panel-f*cking. Overall, I’m pleased with Jean’s showings in both issues so far.

Her hug with Vision was well worth the price of admission.

Slightly more pertinent, why in gods name would any Avenger go within a thousand miles of Krakoa without a Psi-Blocker (the weird treatment of them as some kind of violation is really weird)

Psi blockers aren't infallible. They can be bypassed by the right person.

Thing is...if they were being taken on an impromptu tour before arriving at the Healing Gardens they could have been rerouted to avoid going anywhere near the Hatchery. That scene was a bit of contrivance really, but we got a fabulushly illustrated Emma out of it.

I remember Xavier communicating telepathically with Danger, and UNIT also employed advanced countermeasures to defend against psychics, so it seems that when it comes to advanced machines, a mind is a mind, and it makes little difference if it's stored in a biological brain or an artificial one.
