**** year continues to get shittier.
Writing about comics https://bookofhsssh.blogspot.com
This sucks. We've lost so many talented creators this year, but this hits hard for me. Loved Alan's stuff no matter which character he was writing for.
Geez, what a year this one has been. Loved his work on L.E.G.I.O.N.
My thoughts go out to his family and loved ones. R.I.P.
Peace
Loved his work on L.E.G.I.O.N.
I remember he left that book right after the conclusion of the Ignea story (around # 39 or 40) due to some health issues. Not sure what his condition was.
Really difficult loss. He was a great writer.
Alan Grant wrote the very first Batman comic books that I read as a teenager just getting into comics. Paired with my favorite Batman artist, Norm Breyfogle, Grant's Batman was driven and intense but also human, his compassion always at the forefront. In my opinion, too many writers these days have forgotten the "knight" part of "The Dark Knight" doesn't mean "armored," it means a man of nobility and decency that protects the widow and orphan. That's how Grant wrote Batman and Bruce Wayne, who often dealt more with street-level threats like drug dealers and other criminals and how their actions affected the innocent than Batman fighting members of his rogues gallery. Breyfogle's genius captured these qualities in art that almost felt as if it was moving. They remain my favorite Batman creative team and the world is a lesser place now that both are no longer in it.
Here are a few pages from some of my favorite stories of theirs, "Batman: The Last Arkham (first arc of Shadow of The Bat) and my absolute favorite Batman story, "The Nobody," from Shadow of The Bat #13. "The Nobody" encapsulates everything that The Batman is to me and, I believe, everything that makes the character so iconic.

I've greatly enjoyed reading his comics work particularly his work on Batman. I think he really helped capture the character, his world, and the kind of stories people come to Batman to read, and his contributions to the franchise can't be stated enough.
RIP Alan Grant.
Rest in Peace to a great author.
one of my favorites growing up.
he was the voice for Batman so long when I was a kid, damn this one stings.
RIP, now you can join the other greats that we lost this year and years before.
Damn it. Another great creator lost to us.
I loved his Batman work.
"My name is Wally West. I'm the fastest man alive!"
I'll try being nicer if you try being smarter.
I read a lot of his Batman, Etrigan/Demon, and Lobo books when getting into comics in the 90s. He’s a big reason why I stuck around and started collecting. R.I.P. sir and thank you for your great work.
Sadly, this cover has become prophetic far sooner than anyone imagined.
