Default Poll: The Best Horror Franchises

For almost as long as there have been horror films, there have been horror franchises, which ones do you think are the best.

This is list contains some of the most popular and longest-running.

I went "Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Child's Play", as they have the most entries I enjoyed. For Freddy I liked 1, 3-5, half credit but "Jason vs Freddy". I enjoyed the first 3 "Child's Play" movies, and the new reboot was enjoyable. I like both franchises because the monster/slasher type was funny and scary. Making fun of themselves while also trying to be scary. Child's Play went a little far into the humor when Tilly joined, but I get why they did it. Jason or Mike Myers are just boring to me, Hellraiser was visually interesting but quickly got boring. The Leprechaun was in that humor/horror category but only really liked the first film.

Wouldn't call Alien/s horror as much as a sci-fi/horror mix, and only liked the first 2. Texas Chainsaw Massacre, same with the first two. Can't stand the Conjuring universe or the real life couple of con artists who inspired them. Loved the first 3 of the Living Dead franchise, fell off a cliff after (though the Snyder remake was the only Snyder movie I've ever enjoyed).

While the original Halloween is better than any of the Friday the Thirteenth movies combined, the sheer awfulness of most of the sequels (save H20 and Halloween 2) makes it the worst of the major classic slasher franchises in my eyes.

The thing about horror franchises is I can't think of one with more than three films that doesn't have an awful entry.

If Land of the Dead was Romero's last zombie movie I would probably crown his Night of the Living Dead as the best horror franchise, but then again clunkers like Diary and Survival exist.

The original Exorcist and Exorcist 3 are my first and second favorite horror films and I quite like Paul Schrader's Exorcist Dominion, but I've still yet to see Exorcist 2.

But there are plenty of good to great horror trilogies

    Sleepaway Camp 1-3

Return of the Living Dead 1-3

Scream 1-3. The first one is a masterpiece the second and the third are a lot of fun if you ignore their endings.

The first two remakes of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Invasion of the Body Snatchers 1979 and Body Snatchers 1993) feel more like standalone sequels that full on remakes so I would include them as a trilogy along with the original.

I would crown Sam Raimi's Evil Dead 1 & 2 alongside Army of Darkness as the best horror trilogy though, as each entry is equally great in my opinion.

Damn I cant believe someone else remembers sleep away camp! Those are some fun movies.!

For me I loved the night of the Living Dead (Black and White and Tony Todd) Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead (the first ones not the awful remakes) And Land of the Dead.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre has always been fun for me.

Saw 1 was okay then it just turned into Gore Porn.

Halloween 2007 was pretty good to me. But the New Halloween and Halloween Kills are unwatchable.

But all time greatest Horror are the old Black and White Universal Movies. No one can tell me different so dont try!

Not sure it's considered horror but I would go with the Paranormal Activity franchise.

Those first 3 films scared the bejeebies out of me.

Of those listed I went with Alien as it had the most well made films...the others are mostly garbage slashers. I'd say either the Hammer Horror films or the Universal Monster films are better than any of those other listed franchises by more than a few country miles. Heck even the 90's Mummy films are better than any of those.

I only know Sleepaway Camp as that movie with the killer being revealed as a boy who's abusive aunt forced to take on his dead sister identity because she already had a son. The reveal shot was absolutely hilarious

I mentioned the Hatchet series in another thread. Only 4 films, they manage to have enough blood and guts for twice as many flicks. But probably no more or less than TWD shows. Pretty straight forward villain origin. Lots of humor in the characters' one-liners and how the creators don't take themselves too seriously. Plenty of homages to other horror franchises -- complete with cameos, Easter eggs and starring roles.

How are you not sure? ..You my friend have mentioned one of the Horror franchises 'par excellence'! This absolutely makes the list especially the first three parts, excited for 'Next of Kin' although from the trailer it's more of a Midsommer vibe than PA but I like the fusion.

The franchise which may or may not fit here,I think is Final Destination ,but I think it fits if we think of death as sentient or effected by sentient being.

I wouldn't call "Alien" a horror franchise, even though the first film was horror/scifi.

And man - there have been TEN Hellraiser films?? I would never have thought.
