A Haunting in Connecticut II takes place in the South?
I'd love to have been a fly on the wall when that was decided.

More psychological thriller than a horror, this film was directed by Aneesh Chaganty and written by Chaganty and Sev Ohanian.

A teenager who is confined to a wheelchair and homeschooled begins to suspect that her mother is keeping a dark secret from her.

While the movie is predictable it is done well enough to still make it a fun watch.

I've been mulling over making an attempt at 100 horror movies for October since last week when it began to look feasible, and today was a big push towards reaching that goal with 6 films in under 24 hours.

    88. The Unkindness Of Ravens (2016) - Tubi summary: "A war veteran travels to a retreat in the Scottish Highlands to come to terms with his PTSD. But when a supernatural force causes his flashbacks to grow stronger, his fears begin to manifest with grave results." Decent super low budget, psychological horror, featuring gorgeous shots of the Scottish countryside and above average acting considering what is typical for a production at this price point. Ony real weak area is dodgey af, cheap looking CGI, luckily it's kept to a relative minimum, feel they likely could have done better using stock footage with filters and quick edits to better effect. Still enjoyed it though, and may revisit in the future to see how it holds up.

    89. Hellraiser (1987) - A puzzle box opens a gateway to a dimension where pleasure and pain are indistinguishable, it also summons the cenobites to lay claim to the body and soul of anyone unlocking the box. The first in the franchise, and arguably the best, it was also horror author Clive Barker's directorial debut, which introduced the world to Pinhead, though the character was simply referred to as "Lead Cenobite" and didn't receive the official moniker until the sequel.

90.Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988) - First sequel in the long running Hellraiser franchise, and arguably the best of any of the productions following the original, though it does have plenty of flaws of its own, along with some effects work which hasn't aged very well.

    91. In The Mouth Of Madness (1994) - Do you read Sutter Cane? Insurance fraud investigatorJohn Trent is looking into the disappearance of horror writer Sutter Cane, slowly descending into madness as reality is seemingly rewritten around him. My second time watching this movie, and I actually liked it a lot more than I did on my first viewing last October, but I find that happens quite regularly.

    92. The Strangers (2008) - This is one I haven't seen in a while, and only watched twice before this evening. I like it, there's just so many other films I like more, so it routinely gets passed over in favor of those or movies I haven't seen. Anyway, see it has a fairly middle-of-the-road rating, not overly positive or negative, which I guess is about right, doesn't really offer much new to the home invasion/slasher genre, but it does a good job of building suspense with a slight air of creepiness.

    93. Shadow Of The Vampire (2000) - The movie is essentially a What If tale, showing what might have transpired had the vampire of F. W. Murnau's 1922 film Nosferatu, Count Orllok, been an actual undead, blood-sucking creature of the night.Great acting throughout, and John Malkovich is excellent in his role as Murnau, but it's Willem Dafoe who steals the show with his portrayal of Max Schreck/Count Orlok, the film is worth seeing for his performance alone, which received considerable praise.

    1. The Bat (1959)
    2. Hound of the Baskervilles (1959)
    3. The Vampire Happening (1971)
    4. The Blob (1958)
    5. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
    6. Magnetic Monster (1953)
    7. Angry Red Planet (1959)
    8. The Blob (1988)
    9. The Raven (1935)
    10. Invisible Man (1933)
    11. Comedy of Terrors (1963)
    12. Ghost Ship (2002)
    13. Return of the Invisible Man (1940)
    14. Forbidden Planet (1956)
    15. Invisible Woman (1940)
    16. The Invisible Man's Revenge (1944)
    17. Galaxy of Terror (1981)
    18. Wasp Woman (1959)
    19. The Canterville Ghost (1985)
    20. The Terror (1963)
    21. Terror Birds (2016)
    22. Fright Night (1985)

    23. Friday the 13th (2009) - Bleh! This ambitious reboot of the original combines the killing elements of the first four movies into one, doubled the amount of teenage victims, showed how Jason got the hockey mask (he found it, lol!), and made Jason a bit more of a "lunger" rather than a "walk around and stab gently" kind of guy. Its a fine point to put on a guy who goes around murdering people but Jason just didn't feel like Jason. The movie really does nothing at all with its plot or characters and thus falls into the realm of unintentional parody.

    24. Satan's Triangle (1975) - A seaplane crew finds a ship with a bunch of dead people on it and one live woman in an area known as Satan's Triangle. A million years of exposition and flashbacks later, we discover a startling twist that I saw from the moment they said "hey, there is someone still alive down there!" Another made for TV movie, this time from the 1970s. Bleh. This is the kind of crap we had to deal with for years and years on TV, its a wonder that TV is even still around. At least this one had one of my all-time favorite actresses, Kim Novak, in it.

    28)The Empty Man (2020)
David Prior is the Director and wrote the Screenplay, based on the graphic novel by Cullen Bunn and Vanesa R. Del Rey's

A Retired cop is asked by a friend to investigate the disappearance of her daughter, who seemingly packed in the night and left an ominous message on the bathroom mirror - "The Empty Man Made Me Do It." As he investigates this mysterious figure further, he begins to see and hear strange things and is forced to come to terms with his past and what it means for his future.

This was okay, started off strong but got a bit too slow in the middle but I think it is worth the watch.

    94. Begotten (1989) - Black and white experimental horror shot in a style reminiscent of silent films of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Clocking in at 72 minutes, and featuring no dialogue whatsoever, the film's stubbornly impregnable narrative presents elements drawn from various creation myths, where cycles of birth, violent death, and grotesque rebirth are a routine day at the office. Slow-paced with a generally creepy vibe and imagery some will likely find disturbing, it's definitely not a film for everyone, most tend to find it dull and boring (they've obviously never sat through the full 8+ hours of Andy Warhol's Empire), but if you're at all intrigued with unsettling, abstract, art house productions that are open to interpretation, then this one might be right up your alley.

Vincent Price stars as nihilistic Satanist who gathers aristocratic friends to his castle to wait out a plague with sadistic decadence. One of the best movies that Roger Corman himself has directed, one of the best Poe adaptations, and surely one of the best adaptations of such a short story that one can ask for. There's a lavish, modestly surreal quality the production design. Price is great in this and the supporting cast all hold up their end. There's a very fitting orchestral score, and some memorable deaths. The notable flaw is that many scenes cut off very abruptly. I don't think it's even for content, it's just jarring editing.

Häxan is a silent film from Denmark. A documentary about the lore of medieval witchcraft and witch hunting, featuring re-enactments that are what push it into horror. I recognized some scenes from this as clips used in other movies, docs, and music videos over the years. There's a particularly striking scene of witches flying over the countryside, and some good Devil makeup.

    24. Satan's Triangle (1975)

    25. Halloween Kills (2021) - Michael Myers continues his killing spree after the 1978 and 2018 movies, dialing it up to eleven, and the town attempts to fight back but fails. Seriously, the entire town, they form an angry mob to go take out Michael. This movie brought it, and it felt very much like the original two movies in many ways and gave me a satisfying experience. Positives - atmosphere, great music, anti-Halloween III easter eggs, Michael Myers was nigh perfect in his movements, decent characterization, constant death, the mask getting more and more damaged, and great set up for the finale next year. Negatives - there was so much killing that it got kinda old. Now I have not actually seen the 2018 movie, so I'll be doing that at some point, but I heard it was generally liked while this one not so much.

    26. Monster from the Ocean Floor (1954) - A giant ameoba from the ocean scares people until they realize its easy to kill giant ameobas. Forgettable movie, I can only guess many people during the 1950s made out to this one on a Saturday night.

    27. Kiss of the Vampire (1963) - A vampire cult secretly hypnotizes and kidnaps a newlywed wife and the husband goes after them. This one had a pretty good set up and seemed to be going places but then has a big WTF ending that evoked the kind of weirdness in dealing with vampires present in Bram Stoker's book. The ending also begs the question of why the guy who caused it to happen apparently hadn't ever done it previously. Although this was a fairly good movie from Hammer, its not one I'll remember all that fondly.

    29) The Silence (2019)
Directed by John R. Leonetti, adapts the 2015 horror novel of the same name by Tim Lebbon. The film depicts a world under attack by creatures who hunt by sound.

It is easy to accuse The Silence of being a cheap rip-off of A Quiet Place but the novel did come out first, the problem with this movie is not that it has a similar premise to another, the problem is that it never used that premise well and in the end offers a dull product.

After watching Begotten earlier, I veered off my planned viewing for the evening into a few slightly more art-y films, which mainly get a horror tag for some surreal imagery, generally unsettling/disturbing feel, and/or blood and violence.

    95. Antichrist (2009) - A film from perpetually controvesial director Lars von Trier, it "tells the story of a couple who, after the death of their child, retreat to a cabin in the woods where the man experiences strange visions and the woman manifests increasingly violent sexual behaviour and sadomasochism" (from Wikipedia). I'm really not sure what to say about it, this was the second time I've watched the movie, and despite decent performances from both Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg, gorgeously filmed scences, and a wealth of themes explored, I just didn't feel very invested in either the characters or the narrative.

    96. Hagazussa (2017) - Also a second viewing, but a film I've enjoyed both times, anyway just going to repeat what I wrote last year so I'm not sitting here for two hours thinking about what to say, as I usually do... Not nearly as slow as a lot of people claim, though The VVitch is action packed in comparison, so make of that what you will. Not necessarily a horror film in the traditional sense, but it does go to a disturbing place in the final act which can be considered horrific.

    97. A Field In England (2013) - Sticking with the theme of period pieces featuring characters tripping balls on mushrooms... First time watching this one, it's been on my list of movies to see for at least the last year, it starts out as though it's going to be a period drama, but then grows stranger as the film progresses. The ending is a bit weak, but overall I enjoyed the movie quite a bit.

    28a. Dracula (1931)

Little-known independent movie, I don't think many people have heard of it. I'm not even sure I understood it, I think he ate people or something? I dunno.

    28b. Horror Noire (2021)

A new anthology movie on Shudder, inspired by their previous documentary of the same name. Unfortunately, while the documentary was great, this was decidedly more hit-or-miss, as anthologies tend to be. And at two and half hours, the misses last a lot longer than they do in your typical 90-minute collection.

Also known as The Hand of Death, among other things. In London, a hockey-masked slasher named Jackson falls in love with a blind woman he meets by happenstance. It turns out he's actually erudite and well spoken, and he has an existential crisis and wants to give up killing. I think it might have been better, though harder to pull off, if the movie committed to the bit of Jackson only speaking in grunts. Some the the kills are quite good, but with later scenes I wonder if they had less money or time to setup the gags. It gets more meta toward the end and I don't think those jokes worked quite as well.

It has a similar vibe to Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. Not as good as that one, though. Still, an interesting find. I would definitely recommend for fans of the Friday the 13th franchise.

An Amicus anthology (of course) set at a night club for assorted monsters, with songs performed in between by bands. Vincent Price should have played a vampire long before this. I thought the third story was pretty good, but I only liked one of the songs. Price looks like he's having fun.

The Devil is being chased around the universe by a hunter, and she inhabits an awkward, nerdy woman whose is on a blind date at a birthday party. There are some fun bits with the Devil vamping it up and freaking out the nerd's friends, but when sh'es offscreen for a big chunk and the focus is on the hunter and a civilian woman the movie doesn't work as well. The guy plays his role just too overboard. The story kind of goes around in circles for a bit too, like they just didn't have enough story or characters for the runtime, which isn't that long to begin with.

Directed by David Bruckner, based on an original screenplay by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski. It stars Rebecca Hall as a widow reeling from the unexpected death of her husband, left alone in the lakeside home he built for her, she begins to uncover her recently deceased husband's disturbing secrets.

I honestly don't know how I feel about this movie it left me feeling both disturbed and confused. There were some interesting ideas and twists but I think the movie twists itself into so many knots that it could not get itself out in the end. However, if you are a horror fan I think it's one to watch.

A spinoff of sorts to the Henry Rollins film, He Never Died . Same premise, a world-weary immortal cannibal antihero with some dry dark comedy. You don't need to have seen the first one at all. This one has the woman, Lacey, acting basically as a disinterested vigilante from the start, which isn't at interesting as the time we spent with Jack in the other one before get gets reluctantly drawn into the action. If you like the first one I would definitely say watch this, there's some setup for another movie at the end.

I've talked about this movie a bunch, so I don't have much to say myself this year. I will note that I got it on blu ray recently, I noticed some more background details. Also, I don't think I realized before that Castle Dracula itself is designed to resemble the prince on a throne.
