Going into anime here. Casshern Sins is better than the original 1973 Casshan. Even with the slower pace and having so much edge you can cut yourself if you touch it.

Captain America: The first Avenger is way better than Captain America (1990) film with the Italian Red Skull in it.
The musical Little Shop of Horrors with Steve Martin and Rick Moranis absolutely blows the original superlow budget Roger Corman Little Shop of Horrors out of the water in ever possible way.
Also, as much as I love Boris Karloff, the MUmmy with Brendan Frasier was far more entertaining.
If a previous movie was made, it's a remake for the purposes of this thread. Adaptation or not.
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!
Karl Urban's Dredd is better than Sylvester Stallone's Judge Dredd
Remakes I can't think of any
Sequels on the other hand...
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan: Better than the Motion Picture
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home: Personally, that's my favorite Star Trek Movie
Godzilla: King of the Monsters: My personal favorite Godzilla movie made so far
The Dark Knight: I liked it more than Batman Begins
Hobbit Desolation of Smaug: If I ranked the Hobbit Movies: 3,2,1. Same with the Lord of the Ring Movies

I don't know if we can say LOTR, since they were shot as one long movie, much like the book. It is really one long work. It was edited to give a big battle at the end of each, but they aren't true sequels, just continuations.

John Carpenter's The Thing over the 50's The Thing (from Another World).
Peter Jackson's Return of the King was better than the animated Rankin-Bass version.
Peter Jackson's The Hobbit was not, however, better than the Rankin-Bass version.
