As for me, I have been gone from New York for 8 years and I sound “Straight out of Brooklyn” even today. Taking this to ASM: May knowing it was not Peter but MJ not knowing is simply bad writing on Wells part, but in all fairness compared to the errors we saw in 874, that error was marginal at best.

Meh. I’ve lived in the South (North Carolina) my whole life, and people I run into everyday swear I’m from New York. I’m so southern, my sweet tea has diabetes. They swear I have an New York accent (that doesn’t exist. I’ve only visited the state New York twice my whole life). And this comes from a lot of Northern folk that have moved to the area, a lot that I work with too.

My brother and I are 7 years apart in age. If you close your eyes, or talk to us on the phone, you would never know who you are taking to. To this day, our own mother can’t tell us apart if she’s talking to us, but not looking at us, by being in another room or whatnot.
Also should add MJ is an actress and is thus more familiar w/ dialects and accents than most of the population on this planet. It's a part of her job.

My family can tell b/w me and my brothers on the phone though, so it just varies Ig.

And Peter has an accent that was confirmed by a civilian in canon, he denied ofc but they both new what's up(I'll post the scan if I find it).

Remember when Madonna moved to the United Kingdom and a month later she had that British accent?

She's an actress but I never really got the impression she was that great of an actress. (She doesn't seem to bring home that big of a paycheck and even ends up taking a break and running a bar for awhile. She's not like Angelina Jolie or whatever.) I just assume MJ movies are kind of like Cindy Crawford in "Fair Game."

She was a model first, then an actor. They kinda go back and forth b/w being very talented or being. avg and/or not good.Regardless she's been in many stage plays and movies not to mention in ASM right now she's a big deal and great actress. She has the experience, knows Peter very well and knows he's Spider-man so has every reason to be suspicious not to mention that Ben was in town right before this.

I live in North Carolina ( near Asheville), and on my job there are three (I am aware of )New Yorkers ( myself included)), and you can spot them immediately. Part of being from New York ( especially if you are Irish or Italian) is attitude and it comes out in your voice, the way you walk ( you walk with purpose).

Who exactly was Angelina Jolie when she started out? She was a model-turned actress herself (and unlike Mary Jane who comes from nothing, the daughter of a rich and established Hollywood star) and it took years before she established herself. Her early work was DTV stuff (and this is VHS-era DTV, even more low-profile than today) and appearing in music videos, she appeared in pretty forgettable movies across the 90s until Girl Interrupted.

Mary Jane is intended to be a young up-and-comer and representing the world of struggling performers who have a degree of precariousness in their lives (of course this tends to vary because they kind of made a too-big deal of her modelling stuff after Ron Frenz's attempt to portray her as an 'entry-level model' got ballooned into making her a top-tier supermodel because writers have no sense of scale). Her career has had ups and downs and is uncertain which makes sense if you follow entertainment careers and have some awareness of that kind of world (think of Joey from Friends which granted is a little spoof-y but it's not inaccurate in portraying how an acting gig can be uncertain and lack flexibility).

absolutely, it's a case by case basis. some lose their accents, some retain them.

even really established actors are hit and miss with accents. it's why so many actors require dialect and voice coaches both in preparation for a role and while on set.

even then, trying to catch someone's slight accent variation in a...1 minute call? in a high stress situation?

i remember sam worthington never having an american one despite trying his best.

i'd agree that mj isn't an a-lister though, but talent is only one of many factors in whether or not you make it that level.

with models turned actors you can be cindy crawford, angelina jolie, charlize theron, jamie dornan, channing tatum...the list goes on and the talent varies.

I think MJ is talented, acting-wise, she just has a lack of opportunities for one reason or another.

Agreed, but she's better at them than most of the population. And she's used to high stress, not to mention she knows who Spidey is and is always on high alert.
Alsohe knows Ben is in town and she feels bad things happne when he's around. It's just joining 2 and 2.Even if she doesn't figure out instantly she would on the ride over, right?

i see what you're saying about better than the average, but we could get even more specific with that point.

most actors specialise in certain accents. in general they aren't taught a variety, they're taught what will get them work (standard american, rp english, etc).

from there, other than ones they learn for fun, they learn accents that are project specific like daniel day lewis approximating a dead accent for gangs of new york, but if you asked him to drop a shanghainese accent or to pick one out against a beijing accent, i'm going to bet he can't straight away. so, better than average at certain accents but not all.

actors also don't tend to be experts in their own accent. because they don't need to be, they grew up with it.

the sort of skillset that can pick out a difference in diphthongs in accents on the fly is probably more of a phonetics specialist.

And she's used to high stress, not to mention she knows who Spidey is and is always on high alert.
i'm sure she is, but mj always being on high alert with every phone call she gets? maybe. it makes sense, but man, that would be draining. i'd forgive her for slipping up once.

people in high alert jobs still get caught out from time to time. we're humans.

but since this is a scene that happened off page, we'll likely never know the specifics.

i feel like that's an easy call to make as a reader with all the facts in front of us. being in her shoes would be a completely different experience. an experience that we weren't shown.

Still just another reason why she could have figured it out.Any experience is better than nothing

You have valid points, my point here is that this isn't bad writing but it could have easily been so much better if the writer wanted it too.

Geez. Double post again. My phone acting stupid… maybe I’ll add/edit something important to the conversation here….

Ok, so, personally, I think this would be a perfect time to go ahead and rip the bandaid off of Peter’s Spider-Man identity to Aunt May (again) and also let Ben get his reveal (closure) with Aunt May as well. It’s 20 years over due and doing it all now during the Beyond arch, will have a clean slate for stories for Peter once the book shifts back over to him post 19 issues or issue 900.

Beyond could be used as “clean-up” for both Ben and Peter, cleaning up unresolved Ben plot points from the 90’s with ties to Beyond Corp, Peter and MJ dealing with Harry’s loss, fallout of Kindred, Aunt May dealing with the fact that she has not one, but three nephews (Ben and Kaine) if this could be used as an opportunity to get the ball rolling for that.

I see it as a win. For both Ben and Peter, if this Beyond arch could be used for that. Cleanup and restructure for both of them (and in a sense, both Miles and Kaine as well since Miles is also appearing to go through some upheaval in his own world).

Asheville huh? Sweet! I hadn’t been there in a few years, my God-mother lives there. Local North Carolinian! My brethren!

I actually get mistaken for Italian a lot actually. I’m biracial (half black/white), but due to my light complexion and hair texture, people ask me that all the time. I’m like, wow, Italian? Really? Lol. It’s fun thou. And with my lack of a southern Accent despite living here my whole life, I can imagine peoples confusion.
