I was just thinking about X-Force, FACTOR, in light of the first issue of X-Men Red which introduces a team that manifests the same band of ronins independence but with a far different spirit and approach. For me, Red promises to be the next progression from the by any means necessary approach of later day X-Force that hasn't truly been functionally meaningful since RR's UXF.
Post first wave X-Force IMO is effective as a solo or short-run arc that is and always has been an extrapolation of the first Wolverine solo book and the mutant-most-primal solitary necessity of survival as embodied in the body and blood of the lone wolf, Logan. (which may have been manifested even more resoundingly in Liu's X-23)
Magik has been this, done this, is this, has transcended this and effectively mastered the control of her version of this in Bendis' UXM. Her most violent tendencies are either quasi-suicidal or grand scale end of days - but they're always connected to the most personal and thereby most altruistic of purposes...a very feminine version of the lone wolf.
She sorta exposes the agonizingly adrenalized hyper-violence of ultra super-bland X-Force-isms.
X-Force (as a beat or pulse) IMO works best in the books not as its own book.
Yes. This. Perfect. And that's not a role to fit...there's never been a Magik super heroine...the molds of nobility and admirable courage set by others couldn't apply to her (hopefully). So, this arrival of a different sort of hero (like her soulsword) demands that it be made of her by her and from her and her alone. To me, Illyana's ascension is a far more intimate and darker phoenix arc that courses beneath the exterior ready-made Jean Grey storyline.

I have defended Gorham's work in the past, but....yikes, not a fan!
That hair is not flattering
Okay, now I'm back to hating that design. At least give her eyebrows.
Little cokeflake.
I'm digging Magik's heroin chic look. Let the girl experiment.
I blame her downward spiral on the wedding of the century. Girl's been jilted.
and Kitty's too self absorbed to notice Yana's been snorting that stuff
I want to see Yana blow a phat rail off S'ym's ass. Don't even front like I'm the only one.
