Default Is Stephanie Brown a True Robin? 2021 Edition

What the title says: do you consider Stephanie Brown to be a real Robin, the way Dick, Jason, Tim, and Damian are?

(I'm posing a new poll for this because the existing poll is four years old at the time of writing this, and much has changed in that time that might cause people who voted before to reconsider their vote.)

DC seems to be pushing this for optics reasons so it may eventually be retroactively true. But her importance to the Robin mantle and the Robin mantle's importance to her is not even remotely comparable to any of Dick, Jason, Tim, Damian, or even Duke really.
It's the Dynamic Duo! Batman and Robin!... and Red Robin and Red Hood and Nightwing and Batwoman and Batgirl and Orphan and Spoiler and Bluebird and Lark and Gotham Girl and Talon and Batwing and Huntress and Azreal and Flamebird and Batcow?

Since when could just anybody do what we trained to do? It makes it all dumb instead of special. Like it doesn't matter anymore.

    I voted yes.

She came into the Bat Family and Robin mantle in an interesting manner.

She had, imo, the most realistic tenure of any of the Robins. She didn’t magically gain all the competence in the world, she struggled, she made mistakes, the job took its toll.

Honestly, I think her Robin tenure would have easily been forgotten as Beast Boy's Changeling monicker if DC hadn't used it to have her kick off War Games, kill her off so gruesomely and unceremoniously and proceeded to try and bury the character for a decade and a half mostly to just rile up the fan base.

It seems silly, it's very cut and dry...she used the title Robin and wore the Robin suit so yes she was Robin. Is this some kind of gate-keeping or sexist thing I'm missing?

Starro was Robin too for an event

I don't think that its a defining part of her character of that she did anything to define the mantle. Her time as Robin was nasty, brutish and short. Not much good came of it for her. She'd be better off without that story.

People just seem to want to hold it up as a status symbol to make her relevant since she hasn't seen much focus in recent years and DC had a hard-on for lumping Robins together in group appearances that are shallow and never satisfying. But its more than she's getting right now.

I voted no. I see it more as her filling in for Tim than really taking on the full mantle.

She was better as Batgirl anyway.

i voted yes but I think it's safe to say of the Robins she's probably the least significant to the legacy of Robin; and that's with Duke included. she means far more to the legacy of Batgirl than Robin.

To all that I say: Who cares?

She wore the costume, called herself Robin and so did Batman. Open and shut.

What do you gain by saying she wasn't a "True" Robin? Heck, just the need to say "True" should be a clue that it's just gate keeping which is always bad.

It is an easy no. She didn't really do anything as Robin for the few issues she wore the costume where it felt like she pushed the identity forward in any way. It didn't really define her the way the roles of Batgirl and Spoiler did and I think that is important when it comes to being looked at as a core character in the legacy of the identity. The whole reason she was even in the costume was to push Tim's story forward over her taking on the role and having it mold her character I think. I mean if you count her as Robin then you should count Helena as a core Batgirl given she wore the costume briefly for an event before, but DC obviously wants to be looked at as more progressive and don't like Robin being 4 white dudes, so they push her as a "core" Robin when it doesn't fit at all. I'd count Carrie Kelley over her as being the defining female Robin as she still comes to mind first when I think female Robin and was part of an iconic story as well.

It's interesting to see DC's opinion of her period as Robin evolve. 15 years ago Didio just said no she wasn't. Now DC treats her as Robin just as much as it treats her as Batgirl with her tenure in the role repeatedly brought up and her always included among the 'Robins.' And with the 'everything goes' mess of continuity they've got going now, her time as Robin could have been anything. It could have been War Games or it could have been something much better.

I do think DC realizes what a huge missed opportunity they had in not going all out in making her Robin in 2004 and wasting it all on a poorly conceived shock death.

I second the motion. The motion carries, the naysayers are silenced. Forever.

Yeah see, I don't see it as naysaying. It seems like y'all just want this as a status thing. Like sure it'd be nice if Steph was higher profile. No one should care about that you're right. They can make her a Robin if they want.

But it doesn't seem to me like from a story perspective its really that important to her character. With what's on the page I should say. And nothing has happened in the past 5 years to really add depth or importance to her time as Robin.

We'll see how the Robin's series changes that.

I really don't think its a sexist thing to acknowledge that there is a large difference between characters that were Robin for over a decade and appeared as Robin in multiple media adaptations from shows and cartoons to a character who was Robin for a single year for a single event with no long term plans to keep her as Robin.
