    2) Unvaccinated. She got sick, stayed home and self-isolated for the most part. I saw her (from a distance) in a public place while she had it, though. She thought she was better and was on a vacation last weekend then suddenly started feeling badly and began coughing up blood. Went into the hospital and was there for two days for blood clots in the lungs. It was touch and go for a bit with her - blood clots have been a major cause of COVID-related death. She is back home now, but is going to be on blood thinners for at least six months. Ultimate prognosis TBD.

Thought I'd toss this out there. It really makes sense, personally and for the good of society, to get vaccinated if you at all can do it. Seriously, there are no nanites, no micro-organisms sending Joe Biden your gmail password, no little green men and no fear of angering God, Buddha or the Flying Spaghetti Monster in the vaccine.
A first class cautionary tale about the perils of whistling past the graveyard by not getting vaccinated. Your friend who didn’t get the jab could well have died, and even though she survived, she’ll probably end up a COVID long hauler and have to deal with side effects from the virus for god only knows how long.

They are asking for almost 400,000 pages, all of which have to be reviewed and redacted. The FDA says they can handle 500 a year.
Looks like the FDA released the first batch of Pfizer documents, 91 pages I believe, which can be viewed/downloaded here:

Apparently as covid passes are now required in Italy for many workers, some people try to obtain them by attending "Covid parties" with infected people.

    https://www.news.com.au/travel/trave...ee70a7fd4420ec

A man has died and others are fighting for their lives after a slew of “corona parties” in Italy, where attendees went with the purpose of catching Covid.

The 55-year-old man died in Austria last week after being infected at a party in northern Italy.
Health officials believe the man was an anti-vaxxer who wanted to be infected with the virus to obtain a “green pass”. The passes are essentially vaccine passports that allow Italians to work, attend restaurants and use public transport.
They are only available to those who are vaccinated or who have recovered from Covid within the previous six months.

There are at least three more people, including a child, now hospitalised in northern Italy after catching the virus at similar parties. Two of these people are in intensive care.
To date, there have been more than 133,000 Covid-related deaths in Italy.

Local media reported that there had been multiple accounts of people deliberately trying to get infected.
Spreading the virus on purpose is a crime in Italy under state emergency laws which are set to remain in place until at least December 31.
“We have received more than one account from doctors of patients who admitted to having been infected on purpose,” Bolzano anti-Covid unit Patrick Franzoni told II Dolomiti.

“[They do this] to develop antibodies, and to obtain the green pass without vaccination,” he said.

“There are long-term consequences and even young people can end up in hospital.”

He explained the anti-vaxxers would meet in outdoor areas of bars and hug, kiss and share drinks with someone who is infected.

Bolzano, in the country’s north, is one of the hardest hit by the winter wave of Covid, which is currently sweeping across Europe.
It comes as there is a growing concern over a Christmas Covid crisis.
In other news, a Belgian doctor was arrested for selling at least 2 000 fake covid passes.

If only there was a way to get immunity for free and without having to expose yourself to covid directly. If only.

In the United States, for some groups, it might be about "owning the Libs," but if you look at the anti-vax movement around the world, there are people on the extreme left, the extreme right and in the middle. You can't pigeon-hole them as one group. Maybe the only thing they have in common is consuming social media lies. So blame Mark Zuckerberg.

The hard thing for government in Europe right now is what do do about it. Bringing in lockdown restrictions just seems to prove to these people that they were right all along--it's a massive conspiracy by big brother to take away their freedoms and civil rights. So it drives all these people to join the same aggregate--you've got unvaccinated neo-Nazis banding together with unvaccinated hot yoga instructors and they're all sharing the same air, increasing the chances of infection. Which will ultimately overwhelm the hospitals and make a worse situation intolerable.

I agree about this not being right vs. left thing. I live in Slovakia (in central Europe) and over here, the political parties that fight against restrictions and now against vaccinations are a far right (neo-nazis in all but name) party and two big opposition parties which are left-wing (one of them very populist). The current government consists of right-wing (or center right as you would probably call them) parties and is in general pro vaccination, though they are not so effective in promoting them. From my perspective, it's not so much whether a political subject is left or right-wing when it comes to these questions, but how populist they are. And of course a theory is that the opposition is fighting so much against restrictions and vaccines in order to make the current government look as bad as possible and would probably choose a different approach if they were in power.

Meanwhile, Austrian government has decided to go with a vaccine mandate starting in February next year, as the first country in EU. I am really interested how this goes and how soon other countries will follow, since the numbers are getting increasingly bad in this area.

I just read about your country's new lockdowns starting tomorrow and I hope they help to stop the rising numbers. All the best to you!

I've been hearing about the Austrian lockdown for awhile now, but I thought it would happen sooner. Doing it in February seems like locking the barn door after the horse has bolted. These months--with Advent starting this Sunday, then Nicholastag, then Weihnachten--and all the Christmas markets and church events (one of the most Catholic countries in the world)--and the height of ski season--are going to be super-spreaders.

Given how much Austria depends on tourists at this time of year--if they don't have the pandemic under control, nobody is going to come. Maybe they're hoping businesses will see sense and do what's needed for the economy, before they impose the lockdown.

    The lockdown is now.

The mandatory vaccinations will be in February. I guess they are hoping that some of the unvaccinated will do it before then to avoid the crowds.

Oops! My bad. Thanks for clearing it all up for me. I had got myself all confused about the when and the what up in my head.

And it probably gives those that hesitated until now an option to still get vaccinated before the mandate, meaning that they can still pretend to do it of their own free will, not because they are told they have to. The psychological factor may help to convince some, I hope.

Been reading about the new variant this morning. At this point, it’s no longer a question of IF it migrates to the States, but WHEN.

I fear you're right. And I can't help but wonder if it's already here and just hasn't been discovered yet.

This is a interesting read and provides some insight from South African doctors.

South Africa accuses UK and others of ‘knee-jerk’ reaction to new variant
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...nt-vaccination

However, Dr Angelique Coetzee, chair of the South African Medical Association and a practising GP based in Pretoria, said it was “premature” to make predictions of a health crisis.

“It’s all speculation at this stage. It may be it’s highly transmissible, but so far the cases we are seeing are extremely mild,” she said. “Maybe two weeks from now I will have a different opinion, but this is what we are seeing. So are we seriously worried? No. We are concerned and we watch what’s happening. But for now we’re saying, ‘OK: there’s a whole hype out there. [We’re] not sure why.’
