    Absolutely. My first exposure to the X-Men was the animated series, and while I thought Cyclops was overserious, I didn't have anything against him, but the comics version has always been problematic to me. The version in '97 is one I very much like.

    He's free of all the baggage from the comics. He's too problematic there.

    He became problematic post NXM (though I liked his character arc). He was fine before that

    A lot of people had issues with him too before that, like with Maddie. Claremont was right that the character became untouchable to a segment of fans, like Hank Pym.

    You can see it in the fan reactions, especially in the letter pages back then.

    Had he become the mutant version of Hank Pym, he wouldn't have been one the centeral points of the franchise since then. But thank God Simonson sorta redeemed him afterwards
