While the specifics of Carol's origin are vastly different from the movie's, the impetus for the retcon about her parentage was 100% to try and remove the notion of her as distaff counterpart to the original Captain Marvel, which is what the movie wound up doing. The film went out of its way to avoid presenting her as a Batgirl or Supergirl type spin-off (to the point of flat out excluding most of the other Captain Marvels and making Monica Rambeau a child who never used the name), and that's what the comics were clearly going for as well. The awkward line where Carol's mom tells her that her powers were always her own and didn't need to come from Mar-Vell was particularly telling about the intent, tbh.

It's amazing how the comic failed where the movie easily accomplished it, honestly.

Making her a hybrid only tied her more closely to Mar-vell.

Whereas the movie just had Carol instigate the event that gave her her powers, instead of being unconscious while it was happening.

"Car-El" will never not sound ridiculous .
