The first few novels did have the story hook of the Rebels/New Republic working on taking over Coruscant, as well as Corran discovering his Jedi heritage, while Wraith sort of gave a lot of backstory to The Courtship Of Princess Leia.

There is a Corran who appears in Obi-Wan Kenobi, funny enough; and his grandfather is also mentioned.

Yeah, and those were cool, but I think the larger cast and even Corran himself worked much better with long form storytelling; the fact they’re a crew of ace pilots means you’ve got a high standard of dogfighting to meet and there’s only so much drama you can get from a crew of pilots who are more likely than not to survive. Top Gun: Maverick feels more like an exception to the general excitement and interest level of dogfighting movies than a mean. And to be honest… Corran wasn’t really interesting until they stopped making him the main character of Rogue Squadron and just gave him a book to be a Jedi in. Rogue Squadron strikes me as a similar concept to Solo - good enough for a great TV series, but only a modestly budgeted movie.

…It’s also why I still say that Wraith Squadron was a superior property, because it knew the strengths of genre more than Rogue Squadron did. tsackpole ddi a good job, but Allston was greater at all levels - more memorable characters and cast chemistry, a better villain (Zsinj is just better than Isard), better knowledge of the kind of character hooks to get interested in, and more interesting conflicts in general.

Whatever shale the next major non-game X-Wing project takes, it should pattern itself more off Wraith than Rogue.

I wrote a book with them. Outlaw’s Shadow: A Sherwood Noir. Robin Hood’s evil counterpart, Guy of Gisbourne, is the main character. Feel free to give it a look: https://read.amazon.com/kp/embed?asi...E2PKBNJFH76GQP

Have to admit this is surprising even if Jenkins was out, I'd thought they'd continue simply because Hollywood likes to leech off itself and the idea of "Hey Top Gun in Space" would be appealing to executives right now.

I think LFL themselves are likely weary of that kind of “make the obvious choice” decision making scheme because “Just make a heist movie about Han because he’s the most popular OT character” didn’t work out, and even the more basic “Rian Johnson looks to be hot right now, let him do what he wants with Star Wars and give him a trilogy on top of it” became a no-go after TLJ chased off half the audience (even when Johnson *is* hot right now, and Hollywood itself couldn’t stop fawning over TLJ.)

Kathleen Kennedy is no fool; she knows her own skill set is management-based, and that about half the people they hired in the early part of the Disney era wound up failing to make true blockbuster Star Wars films even when given momentum from other successful entries. And while the ST started off hot enough to make a n easy billion with each entry even when it went bad, Rogue One was a mess of BTS issues before it made a billion, and Solo was a mess of BTS issues that lost money.

A stand-alone Star Wars movie isn’t an easy thing to make, and even less easy to guarantee money with.

Regarding the pilots living, one thing that was kind of interesting about the Rogue Squadron comics at least is that a lot of them had a fairly high casualty rate with the pilots and supporting characters, although this happened a few times in the novels as well. It's been a while but I think part of the rationale for the Squadron being inactive by the time of the novels was because of that.

Maybe this is because of Maverick in part-maybe the pitch was too similar perhaps (Wedge or Poe teaching a new class of pilots maybe?).

I haven't seen it yet but funny enough Maverick's mission kind of sounds similar to the trench run (Small target and everything).

Reportedly some of the reason Chapek was let go was that he focused too much on Disney+ instead of the movie division (Granted, partly due to the pandemic).

Wonder if this is why this is stalled? Patty wasn't too happy with Wonder Woman 2 getting a simultaneous HBO MAX release and maybe she was worried about deja vu.

OK now it seems that with WW3 cancelled Jenkins is back on Rogue Squadron having made a new deal. Obviously will miss the 2023/2024 window though.

And it's been dropped again, along with Feige's project.
