Top Gun: Maverick feels more like an exception to the general excitement and interest level of dogfighting movies than a mean. And to be honest… Corran wasn’t really interesting until they stopped making him the main character of Rogue Squadron and just gave him a book to be a Jedi in. Rogue Squadron strikes me as a similar concept to Solo - good enough for a great TV series, but only a modestly budgeted movie.
…It’s also why I still say that Wraith Squadron was a superior property, because it knew the strengths of genre more than Rogue Squadron did. tsackpole ddi a good job, but Allston was greater at all levels - more memorable characters and cast chemistry, a better villain (Zsinj is just better than Isard), better knowledge of the kind of character hooks to get interested in, and more interesting conflicts in general.
Whatever shale the next major non-game X-Wing project takes, it should pattern itself more off Wraith than Rogue.
