Default Most Successful Legacy Characters in Any Media

The term legacy character refers to a preexisting or entirely original character who inherits or adopts the name or role and attributes of a previous protagonist.

What are the most widely accepted, acclaimed, and successful examples of this trope?

    Star Trek The Next Generation
    Jo Jo's Bizarre Adventure
    The Uncanny X Men
    Lord of the Rings
    The New Teen Titans

    Lord of the Rings?

WTF is Joe Joe's Bizarre Adventure?
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!

Hopefully this counts, but my choice would be Dan Ketch ('90s Ghost Rider):

I'd say it is the DC Silver Age revival of Golden Age names. Flash, Green Lantern, Atom...

I was going to ask the same thing And how are the X-Men legacy characters? They are not recreations from the golden age. The roster changes from Stan and Jack days when we get the All New All Different X-Men in issue #93 with Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus and Banshee as the new members with Scott as the team leader.

    Dr Who
    for the moist part.
I think restorative nostalgia is the number one issue with comic book fans.
A fine distinction between two types of Nostalgia:

Reflective Nostalgia allows us to savor our memories but accepts that they are in the past
Restorative Nostalgia pushes back against the here and now, keeping us stuck trying to relive our glory days.

The Lord of the Rings is a loose sequel to the Hobbit with a largely new cast of characters.

In Giant Sized X Men, the majority of the team were replaced by newcomers

    By this thread's math...

It has to be Luke Skywalker, right?

A manga that started ion 1987 and is still ongoing today with a multi-generational saga starring a number of protagonists belonging to the same family all named Jojo.

The anime versions are on Netflix and, aside from the first one, are a lot of fun!
