I guess Infamous Iron Man would qualify since it was a separate title. He did take Tony's place for a while when he was considered to be dead and then later became cloned or something.

But isn't Ernie Douglas a successful legacy character? He took over as Fred MacMurray's third son.

I would pick Power Rangers as a whole. A lot of the teams that came after the first team had different gimmicks and such. Different teams and even different time eras. How long has Power Rangers in one form or another been on the air? The Toys, the comics? it has made soo much money it is insane.

And there's a question. Are we talking about a character, or a franchise overall? If we're talking about a single character, then Power Rangers and Doctor Who don't really fit as none of them really jumped out as far more successful than the others. If we're talking about a franchise, the Who and the Rangers certainly fit as their franchises struck gold with their reincarnations and replacements. If Doctor Who is considered, then James Bond certainly qualifies as being in the running, perhaps moreso because of Bond's wider fame.

There are differing opinions as to what the actual definition of "widely accepted, acclaimed, and successful" really is.
