I just think Steve's suffered from the continual upheaval of WW's supporting cast and history, as well negative perceptions due to gender norms and expectations.

At the end of the day, Steve is and will remain the closest thing Wondy has to a Lois Lane/Iris West/Carol Ferris type love interest.

I don't read the comics so I don't know about that but in the movies he is respected and overused. I think that's because he's supposed to be that guy that guy watchers can relate to.
