Such a freaking great issue! Doug Mahnke’s art is what got me into collecting comics full time and he knocks it out of the park here. He’s inking his own drawings in this series so it’s that perfect mix of beautiful and raw as hell.
Set in a future where climate change has caused the oceans to rise, the last remnants of humanity clings to life on an island that was once a mountain top. Shades of Walking Dead and other end of the world dramas as a group of more peaceful people trying to survive are bullied and brutalized by a more violent group.
The Green, The Red, and The Rot decide that humanity has done far too much damage to the planet and needs to finally be wiped out so the parliaments can survive and start over. The Green is chosen as the faction to get the job done. A new Swamp Thing is created not to protect but to murder every last human.
All seems lost but as a last resort one of the survivors flees to a mysterious lighthouse looking for help from its lone occupant. An elderly chain smoking British man in a trench coat.
Mr. Constantine has been waiting for this moment and as usual has an ace up his sleeve. Poor Alec Holland is once again forced to enter the battle. John’s **** eating grin is priceless as he summons the reluctant and disgruntled Alec/Swamp Thing.
This is another absolutely beautiful Black Label series and I highly recommend Swamp Thing fans and fans of horror comics to pick it up!
