    Default Silver Surfer Appreciation 2022

Let's celebrate the silver sentinel of the spaceways, the awesome, indescribable....

    Silver Surfer

Stan Lee talks Silver Surfer, here

    First appearance: Fantastic Four 48.

Origin: Norrin Radd, from the planet Zenn-La, at the time a society so advanced that all social ills common to many planets had become only a part of Zenn-La’s distant past. While Zenn-La’s technological and scientific supremacy should have paved the way for further learning and advancement, as a society, the inhabitants of Zenn-La had become directionless and hedonistic. Not so a certain Norrin Radd whose eyes were always toward the stars.
One day, the immensely powerful Galactus, who subsists on the energies of planets, came to Zenn-La to consume it. Dusting off weapons that had not been used in many years, Zenn-La threw everything they could at Galactus in a desperate attempt to repel him…but to no avail. After Galactus mentioned to Norrin that he could benefit from the services of a herald to scout out planets sufficient to satiate Galactus’ endless hunger, Norrin immediately offers his life in servitude to Galactus on the condition that he spare his home planet and the life of his soul mate, Shalla-Bal.
Right away, Galactus transforms Norrin Radd from an ordinary mortal into the supremely powerful Silver Surfer. Knowing the Silver Surfer would never in good conscience lead Galactus to planets filled with sentient life, Galactus deadened the Surfer’s psyche, making him more suitable for the grim task set before him. During that time, the Surfer had become synonymous with planetary death and destruction. Having since been made aware of these atrocities, the Surfer is driven to redeem himself from the terror he and Galactus inflicted on the cosmos. The Surfer seems doomed to relive one romantic tragedy to the next, from Shalla Bal to Mantis, from Frankie Ray to Alicia Masters and from Suzie Endo to Dawn Greenwood.

Powers: Galactus endowed the Silver Surfer with the “power cosmic”, which allows the Surfer a variety of different powers. He gifted the Surfer with his telepathically controlled surfboard, allowing the Surfer to travel from one star system to the next at unbelievable speeds even allowing the Surfer to utilize hyperspace for interstellar travel if he so chooses. He has even been able to travel time on numerous occasions.
Durability – covered with a “galactic glaze”, a creation of Galactus, the Surfer is impervious to the deepest depths of the cold of outer space or the hottest stars. He is impervious to most forms of damage, using stars going nova to fling him into outer space or surviving with ease the crushing gravity of black holes. He has been in close combat with some of the mightiest beings in Marvel comics, including the mighty Thor, the Hulk and Thanos, with nary a scratch. He has even busted through two walls of vibranium at star spanning speeds to save Frankie Ray. He has demonstrated the ability to regenerate body parts if his skin is compromised.
Strength – while not often used, the Surfer has only to will it, and he can increase his physical strength to almost any degree he desires.
Phasing – the Surfer has shown on numerous occasions he can bend his molecules allowing his physical form to pass through solid objects.
Matter and Energy manipulation – the Surfer is able to transform matter to energy and back again if he so chooses. He is even able to destroy planets with energy beams. He can absorb massive amounts of energy and subsists almost entirely on the ambient energies of the universe. He does not require food, oxygen or sleep.
Cosmic Awareness - the Surfer is able to track down energy signatures and bio signatures from many light years away and is even able to track signatures through the time stream.
Vision - He is able to see in different spectrums of light and can see vast distances away as well as see matter on a microscopic level.
Hearing – he was able to tell an individual was a Skrull by the distinct sound of his heartbeat.
Telepathy – the Surfer is able to communicate telepathically if he so chooses, even reading minds on occasion. He has also been resistant to some of the most powerful telepaths in the Marvel universe.
Reaction Speed - the Surfer has demonstrated remarkable reaction speed and is able to maneuver on his board at impossible angles and speeds.

Quick question to all: should the Surfer's rogue's gallery be changed/upgraded/added to? Thoughts?

I just read Fantastic Four: Life Story #5. The Silver Surfer had a good showing there.

    What specifically would you change?

Bonus: in a realm where Marvel and DC comics characters co-exist, which villains from DC comics would make great villains for the Silver Surfer?

I liked the first issue of Rebirth. Seeing the old logo, Marz and Lim... brought me back to being a teenager and just being introduced to the cosmic side of the MU. I liked seeing Genis during his time as Legacy. Hope to see more of him now that he's been brought back to life over in Captain Marvel.
