Default Jean Grey / Phoenix Appreciation 2022

JEAN GREY (aka Phoenix, Marvel Girl, Redd Dayspring, and White Phoenix of the Crown)

    • Jean Elaine Grey was born and raised in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York to Elaine Grey, a homemaker, and John Grey, a tenured professor of history at Bard College. Her siblings included Sara Grey-Bailey, Julia Grey, Liam Grey, and Roger Grey. Subsequent to Jean's death and during her time as the White Phoenix of the Crown, her entire family was murdered by the Shi'ar Death Commandos (Uncanny X-Men #467 and #468).

    • At the age of ten, the death of Jean's best friend Annie Richardson, who was killed in a hit-and-run accident, was the catalyst for both the emergence of her telepathic abilities--she psychically experienced Annie's death--and her submergence in a three-year trauma-induced catatonic state. Jean remained mute and withdrawn from the world for the majority of her prepubescence (Bizarre Adventures [1981] #27; Uncanny X-Men [1994] #308; X-Men Origins: Jean Grey [2008] #1).

    • On the cusp of Jean's puberty and upon the recommendation of a psychiatrist, Professor Charles Xavier began counseling her, later informing her of her status as a mutant. Under Xavier's tutelage, Jean honed both her telepathic and telekinetic abilities, helped Xavier calibrate his Cerebro machine, and telepathically discovered and made first contact with Scott Summers, aka Cyclops, who would become the first member and leader of the X-Men and eventually her husband. However, due to Jean's inability to control her vast telepathic powers, which are "deemed to register--or reach--an undefinable upper limit," Xavier decided to "wall [them] off" by erecting psionic barriers within her mind, which also caused her to temporarily forget these abilities (Bizarre Adventures [1981] #27; Classic X-Men (1989) #42; Uncanny X-Men [1994] #308; X-Men Origins: Jean Grey [2008] #1).

    • Despite being Xavier’s first protégé, Jean would be the last of his first five students to enroll in his school--Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters--and join his newly-formed covert ops team, at which point she became the first female and a founding member of the X-Men. The original members of the X-Men included Jean, codenamed Marvel Girl, Cyclops, Beast (Hank McCoy), Iceman (Robert Drake), and Angel (Warren Worthington III). She and Xavier did not disclose their previous work together to the rest of the team. Shortly after her enrollment in Xavier's school, Xavier classified Jean and Iceman as Omega Level Mutants, i.e., mutants that pose "the ultimate threat" or that have, as Xavier preferred to describe them, "unlimited potential." (X-Men #1 [1963]; X-Men Forever #3 [2001]).

    • A little over a year after joining the X-Men, Jean and the rest of the team was transported to the future by Hank, who had traveled back in time to seek the assistance of his younger self and teammates in order to prevent the further unraveling of mutant-human relations and a looming apocalypse. This resulted in a six-year sojourn during which Jean learned about her subdued telepathic abilities, the tragedies that would befall her and her team, and that she had died, all the while discovering new facets of her psionic powers along the way. The time-displaced teenagers eventually returned to the past, and Jean locked away their memories of their time in the future to "be sprung later" once the time loop was closed (All-New X-Men [2013] #'s 1-41; Guardians of the Galaxy [2013] #'s 11-13; Extraordinary X-Men [2016] #'s 1-20; X-Men: Blue [2017] #'s 1-36; Jean Grey [2017] #'s 1-11; Generations: Phoenix & Jean Grey [2017]; Extermination [2018] #'s 1-5).

    • After their return to the past, Jean and the rest of the X-Men continued their lives with no memory of their future travels and adventures. Soon after Jean's high school graduation, her parents removed her from Xavier's school, though she remained a member of the X-Men, and enrolled her in Metro College, from which she earned her general education degree, i.e., associate degree. She later returned to Xavier's school.

    • A few years later, Xavier began to unlock Jean's telepathic abilities and train her to wield and hone them, while preparing her to aid him in a secret mission that entailed him faking his own death. Xavier instructed Jean to keep his mission to herself, which she did, even though the rest of the team thought him dead for several years. During this time, Computo--a highly advanced robot--would confirm Xavier's classification of Jean as an Omega Level Mutant by registering her as having "infinite mental powers" (X-Men [1968] #48).

    • Sometime after Xavier's return, Jean, along with Iceman, Angel, Havok (Cyclops' brother Alex Summers), and Polaris (Magneto's daughter Lorna Dane) became entrapped on the sentient island--a mutant--Krakoa. After being rescued by a team of new recruits, which included Storm (Ororo Munroe), Wolverine (James "Logan" Howlett), Colossus (Peter Rasputin), Nightcrawler (Kurt Wanger), Banshee (Sean Cassidy), and Thunderbird (John Proudstar), Jean briefly left Xavier's school and quit the X-Men (Giant-Size X-Men [1975] #1).

    • Jean's retirement from the X-Men was short-lived. After being attacked by and fighting off Sentinels, and escaping from the clutches of anti-mutant madman Stephen Lang, Jean attempted to pilot a space shuttle to Earth, and telekinetically shield it from radiation. In the process, she "achieved her full potential as a psi, becoming, briefly, an entity of pure thought." Her psychic distress resonated throughout the cosmos, and the Phoenix Force was compelled to come to her aid.

    • It was later revealed that the Phoenix Force bonded with Jean, creating a clone of her, absorbing a fragment of her essence and placing her in a healing cocoon at the bottom of Jamaica Bay. After enduring several months of mind control at the hands of Jason Wyngarde (aka Mastermind), the Phoenix clone broke free and became Dark Phoenix.

    TO BE CONTINUED

    • During her time as a member of Krakoa's Quiet Council, Jean suggested the establishment of the second of Krakoa's three basic laws: "Murder no man." She would later leave the Quiet Council in order to lead the charge against Otherworld.

    • Upon being offered the opportunity to rejoin the Quiet Council, Jean declined the offer and announced her intention to found, form, and, along with Cyclops, co-lead a new X-Men team that would represent and operate outside of Krakoa.

    • Jean currently resides in the X-Men's new headquarters--the Treehouse--in New York City and co-leads the team with Cyclops.

Uncanny X-Men #303 was my first X-Book, and I've loved Jean ever since.

Every time I see this image, I question why the Marvel Girl outfit is still the costume of choice.

While I get that the intention at the start of HoX/PoX may have been to show that this was the one true Jean (?or something?), there are much better field costumes to choose from (including the one from the Giant-Sized X-men book where she and Emma go into Storm's mind).

    But yeah...

    Happy New Year All.

Wishing good news for Jean in the new year. Return Phoenix to her. Get rid of Aaron.
