Default IMPERIUS REX! Namor the Sub-Mariner Appreciation 2022

Welcome to a thread for appreciating Marvel's FIRST Superhero!

    by BILL EVERETT

    by JOHN BUSCEMA

    by TERRY DODSON

"Child of the Sea. Child of Earth. A wounded raging soul upon birth. Devil's ears, Angel's wings."
    -- J.M. DeMatteis from Man-Thing v3 #7

    MATT FRACTION
on Namor in his Defenders run

We've seen more of outer space than we have of the ocean, and aside from the fact that he is functionally the emperor of Earth in terms of geography, Namor has a geo-political understanding. He has a perspective on scale that these guys don't," Fraction explained. "Namor has been wrapped up in some awful big stuff that the other people haven't. He's going to be sort of like Alexander with the Gordian Knot; he's the shortest path between two points because he's got this very practical experience with realpolitick that the rest of them don't have."

Ruling Atlantis, one of the oldest kingdoms in the Marvel Universe, gives Namor other benefits as well, including access to some of the kingdom's rare historical documents that offer up information on what life on Earth was like thousands of years ago.

"Namor has access to all this stuff that humans don't and can go places they can't go. He's forgotten more things than we'll ever know," Fraction remarked. "Plus, he has his foot in so many different worlds. His unique biology as an early mutant led to his membership in the X-Men. He covers both the mutant base and the Atlantean base -- not to mention he's very well connected, having been a member or so many other super teams."

The Sub-Mariner is a very passionate and proud individual, character traits that often lead to interesting dynamics in the super teams he joins. One thing Namor is especially passionate about is strong women.

He's a guy who will show up to fight a monster with the Hulk and Dr. Strange, but also might roll up into New York, punch the Thing through a wall, try to f**k somebody's wife, and then act like you're the dick when you call him on it.

It's like Tom Spurgeon used to say about Namor, the guy who shows up for a fight in speedos has already won

"He's always been really cool and charismatic, but also arrogant. He's kind of an *******, kind of romantic, and just incredibly powerful."

Namor the Sub-Mariner, Marvel's oldest character, will have been published for 85 years in 2024. So where's my GOOD Namor anniversary ongoing, Marvel?

ImperiusWrecked is awesome with the photoshop! She also did the Namor 80th Anniversary image, since Marvel couldn't be bothered. I think she did a similar Reading Guide image for Doctor Doom -- though maybe it was for SVTU.

Thanks! But plenty of updating to do. O_O

I do have MS photo editor but the best tool I have for ease of use and versatility is an older program from them called Picture It. It has a great collage feature built in and does the layering, etc.

I will have to dig up that reading guide. I know it was on an older thread if that is the one I am thinking of.

Having read PAD's previous Maestro mini series, I'm afraid there will be some jobbing in the future for our new version of the Terrible Trio. Writers have always given the various versions of the Hulk these insane levels of strength, etc.

I hate to be a copy cat but now I want to add a Doom quotes section!

Go for it! Doom has so many quotable gems. I copied lots of sections and pages from old threads. I need to work on actually adding some of Namor's many quips... though some of his gets a bit ... long winded. LOL!!

I think I saw the reading guide on IW's tumblr ... but she'll be around soon, I'm sure.

Well, it IS Maestro's book, so I can see that happening. Though Peter David usually gives characters a chance to shine. And he seems to be one of the few writers to even remember SVTU.

Yes, I guess you are right. I am looking forward to some interplay with Victor and Namor. I did make a start on my quotes section but I am going to have to work on it more tomorrow.

I found the reading guide image but I don't know if I can work it in now. I've already listed a lot of them in text. Oh well, I'll look into that and see what I can do with it. Onward into 2022!

    The same to you, Doombot!

Of course, now I am wondering how / if Atlanteans celebrate the New Year?
