Dead weight in a narrative sense. Like you go in wanting to read about John but you also have to endure the recent editorial pet characters being forced on you at everyone else's expense.

So the story switching to just being about John without any other apparent spotlight hog is a nice change of pace.

I've tried to write something big enough for Marco to flex. He has a cinematic, naturalistic style that I LOVE and I tried to give him a cinematic story to draw.

Stuff is definitely going to happen.

Well I am so thankful that John is in good hands. I was mortified he was going to get Kyle'd or Wally'd. I will definitely pick up the trades or if unavailable the back issues of Redjack's issues.

Looks pretty good. John's outfit is on point. Personally, I think he should have a different jacket, since it strongly resembles the type of jacket Hal always wears. But his overall costume looks good.

Yes, that story was terrible, and Winnick did more stuff in the same vein (like establishing John could fly faster with the ring than the others because black people are natural athletes), but it was not an attempt to degrade the character. Winnick was very big on adding diversity to the line before it was even a high profile discussion, it's just that he was really, really tone deaf. His heart was in the right place, though.

I'll retract my statements on the degrading part. I guess I was speaking out of anger and I let it get the best out of me. But yeah, I don't think it was malice intent, but it wasn't good. I thought his Batwing book was good overall, but he came off as a little tone deaf on there as well. It's just some elements he uses can be used as a negative stereo type towards black people. But he really put a lot of effort on Batwing and cared a lot for the character.

He had locks in Future State. When his fade first turned up it took me a minute to get used to it, but now I have a difficult time seeing him any other way - unfortunately, same with his uniform. All these changes lately are blowing by faster than Kyle's many looks, but as with Kyle, John has one iconic look for me. Maybe if he's able to keep a look for more than a year, I'll be able to acclimate. (seeing him go from soldier/sniper to sword-swinger is also a bit of an adjustment)
