Guess we know now what King's tweet from a few days back was all about.

    Interesting looking "Robin" outfit.

Apparently it’s meant to be an acknowledgment of Superman’s “Robin” from the Silver Age:

"Mark my words! This drill will open a hole in the universe. And that hole will become a path for those that follow after us. The dreams of those who have fallen. The hopes of those who will follow. Those two sets of dreams weave together into a double helix, drilling a path towards tomorrow. THAT's Tengen Toppa! THAT'S Gurren Lagann! MY DRILL IS THE DRILL THAT CREATES THE HEAVENS!" - The Digger

We walk on the path to Secher Nbiw. Though hard fought, we walk the Golden Path.

I worded that terribly, it’s just my own conjecture. However I’m basing this on King having said on WB that he’s been rereading a bunch of old Silver Age Superman comics, presumably for this very project. Given Skyboy is a SA story, the “Superboy” is described as Robin like which is what Skyboy was intended to be (Superman’s Robin), and King loves doing deep dives into obscure comics book lore, I don’t think I’m assuming too much by seeing a connection between Skyboy and this story.

Given King is a huge Moore fan, I wonder how much this story will draw on For The Man Who Has Everything? because the set up is pretty much perfect for a sequel. Superman in another “fake world” created for him by a threat who wants him out of the way, allowing him to live the life he always wanted, and given its King he’s 100% going to poke holes in the “wholesome Golden Age/Silver Age” vibes this is marketing itself as.

Hmmm... I'm going to speculate that in this "What If?" world where Superman gets to spend those missing years with Jon, the boy's going to die a horrible death - cementing the idea that sending him into the future to be aged up with Jor-El was the best thing for him after all.
