It is, it’s production art for the show I believe.

Kryptonite Man, most likely. One of the Kryptonite men at least. Around those years, Parasite had not developted that hulking form.

Writing a post on this guy and honestly the more I think about him, the more I realize that he actually kind of rules? The Machinist is a good villain embodiment of an old Golden Age Superman pet peeve: weapons dealer/profiteers. I know Lex technically does something similar, but this guy being driven by mundane greed and complete indifference to who his weapons kill makes him stand apart from Lex's attempt to always maintain his "villain with good PR" image, and the way he always controls innocents as envoys feels like a really messed up way to do a DC spin on the "Doombot".

Romita Jr. actually, he debuted in the same run as Ulysses:

A rare moment in time where Johns wasn’t just trying to rehash the Donner films. Turns out he can be somewhat creative when he wants to be (unless the idea was all Romita).

Jurgens wrote The Machinist during his Rebirth run (the early panels you posted are from there). That's why I mentioned him too along with Johns.

Oh yeah, the run where the Solar Flare debuted and he told Jimmy his secret. I keep forgetting about it.

    I still like Johns' Superman.

Rereading that brief New 52 run right now and it’s actually pretty good. Not on the same level as his Pre-Flashpoint work but enjoyable enough, and it does do a couple things I like such as the Machinist and Clark telling Jimmy his secret. Would’ve been better received if it hadn’t had Romita doing the art I reckon, and Johns hadn’t bailed yet again before wrapping up his plot threads.

Ulysses had some real potential too, even though he was another “Evil Superman” Rogue.
