One of the things that's the biggest bummer for is that even this bad story was executed poorly. Like if the ride leading to this had been quality and I was really invested in Ben and Janine and he had gotten to win a little bit only for all this trauma to happen and he loses everything, maybe that could have been compelling.
That's just not the story they told though. By the end, Ben has been treated so poorly that this last part just feels like kicking a dead horse. It's just cruel and unnecessary. I definitely think the team should have taken a step back and looked at what they did and realized they did not earn this ending and they didn't right enough by Ben with their time to make the fate they gave him land more that a stale fart.
I never thought I would say this, but I wish they had just left him dead and I could keep wishing for his return, because somehow they keep making it worse
I’m not even sure how I feel about this.
This is progression into further making him more away from Peter, and into his own person. Which is cool.
But. Hmm. Monkeys paw here.
Trust me, I get it. This is the last thing I would want for Ben myself. This goes to show that marvel editorial want him further from Peter than he already is… which is what I meant by monkeys paw.
Until further notice, this is probably my last Spider-Man book again until another Ben appearance. I’ve long since dropped all the other Spidy books….
The thing that kills me about this is that if the goal was "Remove Ben's personality for the next big thing," then do it in the Spider-man way! Spider-man has a history of losing *something* because he makes the right* choice (even though both runs are very uneven, this is something I feel Slott understood better than Spencer). He screws up relationships and jobs all the time because he has to save someone. If Ben must be made into Chasm, at least have it be a choice he made - put on the device, destroy Beyond's mainframe, then lose his mind because of it. Done, pyrrhic, perfectly acceptable. There's no agency or conflict in this character devolution. Ugh
*Or at least a defensible

Remember this site? I wonder what this poor guy must think of this whole Beyond arc...
