I think the point of posting this is that it was drawn by the great Tim Sale, who passed away a couple of days ago.

Odd question but do we consider Kara a sidekick? I was thinking about Dark Crisis and Batman/Superman: worlds finest and both kind of treat Kara as though she was Superman’s sidekick kind of how Dick, Wally, Donna, Garth, Roy, and etc. are also kind of treated as legacy sidekicks in the splash page.
Made me think what the consensus on that was.
"It's fun and it's cool, so that's all that matters. It's what comics are for, Duh."
Words to live by.
There were a few times where she filled the role in Pre-Crisis so I’d be willing to say that yeah she was. But she’s always had a weird relationship with Kal where she’s been kept at arms length from him. Until Jon arrived Superman never had a “side hero” helping him in every issue of his ongoing the way Batman had Robin.

I think most people associate Supergirl into the Robin role whether it has canon backing or not, especially compared to, say, Jimmy.
I’ll say I’m in the “not sidekick” camp. DC has worked very hard over the years at keeping Superman a solo independent hero unless he’s on a team, to the point where the hoops they jump through to create reasons for her to not be a regular part of his stories have made him seem uncaring compared to someone like Bruce Wayne who seems to adopt and sidekick every orphan that comes along. She’s almost the anti-sidekick of legacy characters.
