Yeah, it's possible. They're just close friends that both joined the JLI when the Global Guardians were disbanded.
Even when separate, they still go by 'Fire' or 'Ice', even though they also have gone by 'Green Flame' and 'Icemaiden'.
Fire gets used more often than Ice, though. Probably because she has a more dramatic look and gives DC a Human Torch type of character.
