It might not be quite that dire. The directors are apparently just blocked from accessing the footage. Still bad, but not as bad as the footage being gone for good.

From a practical standpoint, what good does it do if it's never getting out of the vault? Once WBD writes it off (if they haven't already), they can't change their minds and finish it and release it and it seems unlikely that they're going to put the work-in-progress on YouTube for free. It might as well be erased for all the good it does anyone staying in storage.

Because as long as it exists still, there's a chance, however slight, that it could see the light of day somehow. Either officially or through more dubious means. Obviously that can't happen if the footage is literally gone.

Even if this is not the case, I always feel like adoption should be one of the continual themes of the Batfamily, especially in the main continuity.
