You seem to be confusing that with "less sexy".

That second pic has an "evil librarian" vibe to it that I love.

As for queer... we all know what Circe thinks of Ares.

    Yes, quit true!

And while I am not saying they are the same or anything like that, the DC Circe does make me think of Marvel Morgan Le Fay.

LOL! Yes, she needs to watch where she walks and avoid those sharp and pointies.

Also, can't she conjure up some shoes, lol?

Any witch goddess should have an impeccable collection of sorcerous shoes!

    Oh agreed!

Sorceress shoes, booties and fuzzy pink/purple bedroom slippers!

Also, the Glass, Ruby and other assorted mystical ones!

I should clarify, I meant "queer" in the broader cultural/political sense that Phil Jimenez himself often uses it (he lays it out a bit in this interview, or if you're in the mood to get misty-eyed you can watch his acceptance speech at the Eisners).

Sexual orientation is part of it, but it's also about not conforming to "respectable" norms of performing gender and sexuality. For example, in that sense, the OG Marston comics are far "queerer" than Rucka's Year One, even though the latter shows characters who are explicitly WLWs while the former doesn't. An extremely powerful woman with clear agency performing her femininity and sexuality without restraint fits right in there (it's a big reason why pop divas are so closely intertwined with the gay community). Yes, new Circe is a little more masc, but it's a conservative depiction.

Io is another example - she's actually in a relationship with a woman now whereas before it was just heavily implied, but visually she was completely changed to better accommodate norms of gender performance.

Given that she's not a mere mortal? I don't think she feels the need to wear them. I mean, it doesn't happen often... but... Circe could shrug off getting punched through a brick wall.

Oh I know....but going barefoot...is so meh. Like wearing no clothing.

She should have a great costume(s).

I shall throw my name in the gladiator sandals and boots corner, but they got to be sexy looking; slim, elegant, bejeweled.
