Hi all. It's time for a new appreciation thread for Shang-Chi! Whether you have been a fan since the 1970s or just found out about him through his MCU movie, this is the place to talk about Marvel's Master of Kung Fu!

To get the ball rolling, I've begun to appreciate the bus scene from the Shang-Chi movie. The fighting, the parkour, the ingenuity of Shang, one gets a sense of that in this scene:

So is this stuff with Shang's mom all new or is it based on some older stories?

Shang's mom is new. In comics continuity, Shang's mom was a white American woman chosen for her genes. The title seems to be taking cues from the movie.

Speaking of which, in today's issue, Shang-Chi #7 spoilers:

we learn that Shang's mother comes from another dimension, Ta Lo. The villain in the background who has been manipulating events behind the scenes is Jiangli's father and Shang-Chi's grandfather, Chieftain Xi. Very Tekken in a way. For me the strongest moments were those featuring Zheng Zu and his children. We see a Zheng Zu who has seemingly become reformed. However, the on coming wave of Hydra soldiers probably will shatter that humanity.

Again, it's moments like these that really make me want to read more about Zheng Zu. The man is harsh and cruel but there have been moments of humanity and selflessness. The question is what circumstances caused him to become this? In a way, Zheng Zu reminds me of John Kreese from Cobra Kai (yes totally binged season 4 last week. Very worth it ). He's cunning and cruel. There are moments of "no mercy" for sure. What forged that personality?
