Simon in a speedo seems out of character. Tony Stark -- I can see. Even Clint Barton, but not Simon. Hercules would just wear a thong -- if that!

You guys are focusing only on Simon's physical attributes. But Simon is more than a pretty face and hot body.
Simon is the Man of Wonders and he has a smart mind, sense of humor and values his friendships.

Like a Red Dragon, The Phoenix shall Soar in 2024!
Can you just imagine how much better Force Works would have been with Simon? (I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I still love it for the nostalgia).
They team also could have used his help during the Crossing.

He basically done modelling in the past. This including his time at the swimming underwear brand that he took a shot with an unknown female model.
Tell that to Steve Rogers, Clint Barton and many of those male superheroes which have drawn some thirst from many fanboys.
In story, had there been a strong and stable west coast super-team (Force Works, or WCA), who, doubtfully would have been hanging around in NY to be swallowed up by Onslaught, The Thunderbots ruse would have been much more difficult to implement, perhaps, impossible, for the world would still have a powerful and established group of protectors to rely on.
Peace
As much as hated Simon's death in Force Works #1, he also dodged a lot of sh!tty stories. For the most part, '94-'97 were incredibly weak years in the Marvel Universe.
