I think Hal has been consistently portrayed as having a pretty healthy ego, particularly during Johns's run. My personal preference would lean more towards Morrison's depiction, which showed Hal being so confident that he was completely at ease in any situation so he didn't need to overcompensate in the way he did under Johns's pen.
As for Hal's ideal dream world, I think Morrison (and Barr) is again the place to look. Hal would be the swashbuckling hero of a swords & sorcery world, having crazy adventures and kissing whomever was wearing lipstick at the end
