Because she was a fresh character from a beloved cartoon series who at this point in comics has spent the last decade or so distancing herself away from the joker, working on becoming a better person, finding true love and happiness, and has now worked her way into genuinely trying to make up for past mistakes and work alongside the bat-family. Plus a well liked tv show never hurt.
