The first African American Black Canary I read was in Elseworlds Finest: Supegirl & Batgirl and the second was in 'Justice League: Generation Lost' in a storyline set in a post apocalyptic world and that version of Canary was said to be a descendant of Hawk and Dove.

I remember some complaints about it being racist that they chose to racebend the character who has black in their codename. I hardly saw any of those complaints pop up when Jurnee Smollett was cast in the role and the audience seems to have fully embraced her version of the character.

I don't know about racist but it was just kind of the obvious move where you go "oh, they have black in their codename? Perfect excuse to racebend ."

I'm hoping Smollett's solo spinoff lets her show off a more comic-accurate Black Canary.

Black Canary has to be the most successful female heros to be adapted to live action or most consistent. She spent 12 years back2back continually being on screen.

Was it "bad" or just limited because technology wasn't as good/wasn't as budget-friendly as it would become in later years?

Some of the Arrow-verse stuff's not a whole lot better so I guess I shouldn't complain too much. A sonic projectile isn't the worst they've done.

I think it sucks that Deathstroke Inc. brought back Dinah’s Team 7 past. She’s often compared to Black Widow but they really don’t need to emulate that character in any way. Black Canary had her own unique origin that was fleshed out more during Gail’s BoP run. I much prefer Dinah just having a martial arts background and not being a gun toting merc.

Well, with the debatable quality of some of those adaptions...

No, no. I insist on "metagene + random handwave about hanging out with Doctor Fate and Johnny Thunder"

    Or not.

That metagene was really accommodating. The daughter (or maybe granddaughter now) of a heroine named "Black Canary" gets random powers that slide nicely into her legacy super-hero moniker? How lucky is that! She'd have been totes screwed if the metagene had given her, I dunno, were-bear powers or something. "Black Canarybear" just doesn't work.

I'm surprised that Black Siren has continued to play a supporting role over on TSS. Though for some reason she NEVER removes her sunglasses. Even in space.
