I think the original implication in Secret Origins #50 was that Alan Scott and Wildcat (who trained her) had something to do with it and Dr Fate suspected as much but kept it to himself*. I asked Alan Brennert, the writer of story, about it and he confirmed that's what he was going for but it was more of a 'suggestion' in case another writer wanted to follow up on it. This was swept under the rug once the metagene came along and that's the explanation I prefer as well.
*This implies that Alan's disappearance (along with the rest of the JSA) post COIE had something to do with Dinah losing her Canary in Grell's GA run and not the torture she underwent at the time.
The original canary also had the power to summon birds which made the moniker even more fitting:That metagene was really accommodating. The daughter (or maybe granddaughter now) of a heroine named "Black Canary" gets random powers that slide nicely into her legacy super-hero moniker? How lucky is that! She'd have been totes screwed if the metagene had given her, I dunno, were-bear powers or something. "Black Canarybear" just doesn't work.

Although I believe this ability only appeared once.
I think with the way the metagene works, she got the sonic scream because she chose to scream in a moment of distress. If she had chosen to stamp her foot, punch something or imagined something set on fire, the results might have been quite different.
Give it a couple of reboots and I'm sure it will happen. :P

Assassinate Putin!
Some more Golden Age Black Canary.

To be continued . . .
The rest of the Black Canary feature originally from Flash Comics #93 (March 1948) and reprinted in World's Finest Comics #225 (September-October 1974):
I had always liked Canary, but I fell absolutely in love with her with the story reprinted in Adventure Comics (digest) 491 and 492 drawn by Alex Toth. It was also the issue that made me recognize the amazing Mr. Toth and finding his work everywhere at the time!

It was specifically those last two images. I dont know what it was, but I found her to be so extremely glamorous and gorgeous in those drawings.
How the hell did I miss the 2022 thread by 11 days?! Anyway, gotta drop one of my favorite Dinah images:
Preferred Dinah occupation?
Arrow had her be a lawyer
BOP film had her as a lounge singer
YJ has her a therapist
Comics has had her own a floral shop/entertainer/army or whatever force she was part of
Florist/martial artist/covert ops specialist (for Oracle)/emotional center for her friends and loved ones.
Also Greg Weisman said Earth-16 Dinah does own a florist shop, for what it's worth.
Back in the day, I enjoyed Dinah and her floral shop.
But unless you make Black Canary a more localized hero who protects her neighborhood/city, then a floral shop would probably not make sense unless she's more of an absentee shop keeper/owner.
