I think you hit the nail on the head- fine, for some people, but in a fan fiction way. When he brought back Stunner in that comic, or had Felicia confront Ock, or have him bond with Venom, he wasn't telling a story; he was checking things off a list and saying "ooh look how clever I am! Only SLOTT is brilliant enough to think of this" A one-sided raspberry at the people who don't like him online, is what it felt like at times. He... declares plot points in a loud fashion rather than let them happen naturally in a story. It's the opposite or verisimilitude or immersion, it's like fan fiction by someone with good ideas who doesn't understand the mechanics of storytelling, just read too many comics.
