Beaten, cornered, barely alive, no JLA to back him up, no prep time, no secret gadget or contingency plan to beat Despero, just sheer guts, determination, bravery and zero fear because he understands his enemy's psychology completely. This is the Batman I want to see on the Justice League. Scenes like this are much cooler to me than any scene where Batman beats everyone with prep time and gadgets.
Side notes:
-This and 'Return of the Justice League' arc prior seem to be the seeds of the modern Batman seen on the Justice League which Morrison would later develop into the Bat God.
-This story arc was probably the inspiration for the 'Hearts and Minds' episode of JLU.

That story arc with Despero was the high point of the Detroit era Justice League.
There was a sequel of sorts to this storyline in Giffen and DeMatteis's Justice League 37-40 which was just as awesome.
Both comics portray Despero as this terrifying force of nature which is why he is perhaps my favorite DC villain.

A favorite scene of mine from Morrison's JLA run. This was the storyline that had all of the fairy tales coming true. Wonder Woman falls under the spell and is Sleeping Beauty. She's a princess who needs to be woken up with a kiss. Fortunately, the team did have a king, Aquaman. Indeed, all kings were once princes no?
"I am a man of peace."
"A man of peace...who fights like ten tigers."
When Superman and the other members of the Justice League first meet Doomsday and combine their attacks into one:
"I am a man of peace."
"A man of peace...who fights like ten tigers."
And that still doesn't stop him:
"I am a man of peace."
"A man of peace...who fights like ten tigers."
JLA proving to the Spectre that even in the most depraved of minds, there's still an ember of light:
"I am a man of peace."
"A man of peace...who fights like ten tigers."
Break the sixth dimension!
