In ASM #311, a man dies trying to assist Spider-Man and Peter returns home distraught. Later at MJ's modeling gig, Peter helps in an altercation at the bar. MJ helps relieve Peter's guilt, saying it was Peter's own conscious decision to help, same as the man who died, and Peter can't hold himself responsible for that.

SPEC 146: Kristy Watson, MJ's little cousin, bonds with MJ over modeling talk and is oddly packing away tons of food yet being alarmingly thin. She makes her presence known and quite uncomfortable for Peter between awkward flirting and a revealing shower situation!

WEB #47: In a visit to May's house, MJ cutely covers for Peter's absences saying he goes on "constitutional" walks for his health! May agrees to take Kristy in to stay with her giving Peter and MJ some freedom. Finally, Peter has a serious discussion alone with MJ regarding Harry!

*The dialogue at this dinner is funny/well done

ASM #312: Peter and MJ try to make sense of the strange activity in NY from Marvel's "Inferno" event, leaving each other reluctantly to go work. At MJ's job, she is forced to take out living jewelry while later in the issue Peter has his own encounter with Green Goblin and a demonic Hobgoblin!

Spectacular #147: "Inferno" continues, and while the city goes mad and Spidey is occupied, Mary Jane continues to fend for herself taking out demons with the photo set equipment!

*Great seeing MJ able to handle things here. Already early on in the marriage we have a lot of incidents where she is a force to be reckoned with. Makes you wonder what the Raimi movies were thinking. Oh well...

Indeed. And speaking of "overly amorous agency reps" . . . that's actually quite morbidly funny, given the scandals in the last five or so years regarding how women in the entertainment and fashion industries get (mis)treated.

Seems like something that's happening for decades behind the scenes, probably why it's called out here in the late 80s.

    ....

WEB #48: MJ and her crew travel the sewers to escape the dreaded events of "Inferno". There they meet Spider-Man as he battles Hobgoblin! MJ manages to save her husband from the Hobgoblin by catching his cape on fire and Spidey uses the distraction to get the upper hand!

*MJ for the assist again! This girl is on fire .... eh, wait no, that's the Hobgoblin!

Spider-Man swings his wife to safety above the city streets (they really can't help themselves being horny during battle ha ha)!

*They look cute here... Spidey in his costume and MJ in her wardrobe!

Funny that Buscema drew MJ in her classic Romita design instead of sticking to the McFarlane look. MJ looks like a completely different character even though it's all supposed to be part of the same story.

Also, Sam was a fan of the Silver Age Spider-man stories, so I doubt he or the producers read much of this era apart from maybe Parallel Lives. (Though admittedly his Mary Jane isn't at all like the Silver Age version either.)

Buscema does switch styles eventually to the big wavy hair but he was just slow to adapt. Before now, the books were independent and not crossing over so I guess suddenly changing it for one event would have been odd. Crossovers are pretty notorious for having different hair and physical appearance for many characters through the 90s. MJ’s hair is just one clear example of that.

ASM #313: Next in "Inferno" Peter has to take on a flying shark in the midtown tunnel! (the original Sharknado?!) At home, MJ babysits Kristy as Peter goes to find May only to deal with the Lizard ...

WEB #49: MJ meets up with her old friend Lorraine to find out she's on drugs and needs help! She calls Peter to go after the drug dealer while she tries to get Lorry to rehab, but nothing is available or anything Lorraine can afford...
