I can't even find an image for it, but it basically went like this:

In a running gag, the terrorized citizens of Houma reached out to Hero Hotline to send out a hero, but their agent (Tim Trench) was stuck in traffic, and was going to be late.

When the issue was over, Trench finally showed up... but he was some weird super-hero in a dark trench coat and mask, NOT the grizzled noirish private dick.

    It was... odd.

Another investigator who first appeared in Detective Comics #1 (March 1937) was Speed Saunders.

I started a separate thread for him last year:

It appears Speed Saunders' last Golden Age appearance was in Detective Comics #58 (December 1941). Then, when the JSA was brought back for its own series in 1999, Speed Saunders returned as the grandfather of Kendra Saunders (the then latest version of Hawkgirl), even rating a "Who's Who" entry in Hawkman Secret Files and Origins #1 (October 2002).
and here are a few more pages from his first apparance:

    To be continued . . .

Back in the Golden Age, when Black Canary headlined her own solo-feature (without Johnny Thunder), DC introduced the private detective Larry Lance in Flash Comics #92 (February 1948).

Years later, Larry Lance was retconned into being a former police detective who had been partnered with Black Canary's father, Lt. Richard Drake.

from Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe Vol. X (December 1985)

First appearance of his feature was in Action Comics #419 (December 1972) and it appeared seven more times through Action Comics #432 (February 1974).

Over the years, he would be featured in places like The Brave & the Bold as well as Detective Comics, and sometimes Christopher Chance would have his own one-shot or mini-/limited series.
