Default Secret Origin or Emerald Dawn? Which Is The Superior Hal Jordan Origin Story?

I read Secret Origin a decade ago. I don't remember much, but I felt how Johns interwove plot threads currently happening in his run such as Atrocitus and the Blackest Night prophecy, and connected them to Jordan's origin was very contrived.

I have yet to read Emerald Dawn, but I'm a fan of the pre-Parallax 90s Green Lantern comics, so I'm excited to check it out.

I liked the C. Priest contributions.

Emerald Dawn makes its mistakes but Secret origin isn't great outside the story Johns was already telling. It retcons a bunch of stuff in/out (including earlier parts of his own run!) and largely exists to build towards Blackest Night, but doesn't stand out as an definitive origin for runs prior or after.

As Green Lantern wasn't rebooted after Crisis, Emerald Dawn does a decent job of serving both an introduction for new fans and an updated origin for the existing cannon (again, with a few tweaks).
"Has Sariel summoned you here, Azrael? Have you come to witness the miracle of your brethren arriving on Earth?"

"I WILL MIX THE ASHES OF YOUR BONES WITH SALT AND USE THEM TO ENSURE THE EARTH THE TEMPLARS TILLED NEVER BEARS FRUIT AGAIN!"

"*sigh* I hoped it was for the miracle."

Dan Watters' Azrael was incredible, a constant delight and perhaps too good for this world (but not the Forth). For the love of St. Dumas, DC, give us more!!!

Secret Origin. Not the best thing Johns could've done, but I'd never support a superhero origin story where the main character is driving under the influence. Miss me with that.

Or was that in Emerald Dawn II? Whatever, it was a crappy thing to do.

It was ED 1. ED 2 starts with Hal serving time for that incident.

Neither. John Broome's story of Hal Jordan is a lot better. What I like about that is it was like peeling an onion. You don't get everything right away. It's a slow process of discovery for Hal and I imagine for the readers back then. In real time, you're finding out more and more about the Guardians of the Universe and the other possessors of power batteries in the universe.

In both the James Owsley and Geoff Johns versions, because they want to cut to the chase right away, they leave out all that gradual discovery and do information dumps immediately.

I prefer to think it actually happened the way that John Broome laid out--and the later origins are just bad edits.

Yeah, I'll go with Emerald Dawn too. It had some flaws, but, all in all, it's a great story, and, IMHO, better than Secret Origins.

    Peace

    Definitely voted for Emerald Dawn.
I'm pleasantly surprised it's getting so many votes here; a few years ago I got the vibe that it was highly overlooked. Maybe it's gotten a little more exposure since Johns is no longer the current "showrunner", or maybe this community just has more people that have read it than others I've seen, but either way, glad Emerald Dawn is getting some attention!
