Default Black History Month: List Your 28 Favorite Black/African American Heroes

To celebrate BHM, a couple of friends suggested that we put together a calendar featuring one fan favorite African American character for each day of the month of February. So let's hear it: Who are your favorite Black heroes? (I'll try to update this list periodically to avoid duplication of effort.)

Sunspot, Venus Dee Milo, and Mettle. Yes, Mettle, from Avengers Academy.

Now, granted, Mettle's ethnic origin is a bit of mystery. He's Hawaiian. His mom appears to be Caucasian, but we've never seen his dad. Judging by Mettle's dark complexion and black twists I'm going to go ahead and call it. Mettle is blackity black black (ok, not THAT black, but still).

If his mother is white, and he looks black, he must be mixed race. He counts as black, I'd say.

Venus De Milo? Only superhero called that that I've heard of is the female Ninja Turtle from the live action Next Mutation show.

It's hard to even think of 28 African-American Marvel heroes. The American part means you can't include Black Panther, Shuri, Storm and Bishop - Bishop's an Aussie and the others are actual Africans.

Though I will say my #1 is Miles Morales (another hero who looks black but is actually mixed race - his other half is Latino).

Um, I think that's why OP included black heroes. Hey I digress!

Storm was actually born in New York City. She also was listed in the "Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe" as a citizen of the United States. (I don't know if the Krakoa era has changed that last part though. I assume it's duel citizenship?)

Funny thing with Monet, and her family, is that apparently the writers in the original story with her actually made her dark skin come from Algerian Berbers.

But that gets into how you define "black"... and opinions vary there. Especially when you have to .... use detective work and look for context clues to try and guess what cultural background some characters even have.

Cecilia Reyes is another one... is she one of the relatively dark latinas or...? That's actually never been canonically established. At this point it'd probably be a retcon anyways. I personally think Latina, though. Her first appearance kinda reads as that to me.

Karima Shapandar is another I've seen... but... she was working in Calcutta as one of the local police when she got turned into Omega Sentinel. She's not African anything.

Lucas and Shard Bishop also get this. We know that one side of their family is actually Australians. Not really sure of the other. Might be 100% Aborigine for all I know.

I get confused whenever this kind of question comes up because I've seen too many ppl stressing the distinction between African-America, Afro-Latino and African. However I'm seeing all these categories in one list when the question specifically asked for African-American.

I like seeing Khora of the Burning Heart make it onto this list.

The whole Arakki thing was kind of a feast, or would be, if they were better explored developed, because there's (in some estimations) as many as sixteen million of them, and they all seem to be from north Africa. Apocalypse, Genesis, Bei, Isca, Death, War, White Sword, etc., etc.

It is cool that the list has gotten so far beyond 'Storm, Black Panther, Luke Cage, Brother Voodoo and Misty Knight' and now includes people like Synch and Sunspot and Monica Rambeau getting some of the love and recognition they deserve. Let's hope it keeps going and elevates the profiles of Frenzy and Tempo, Bling! and Shola Inkosa, Sun Girl and Fuse & Alloy!
