That isn't an ending, that's a "to be continued". Especially for characters in serial fiction.

Death was the only ending for them I saw as having any possibility of being final. And then only because it was "an ending" implying that no one decided to write a story resurrecting them.

Happily ever after could end in their deaths, just after living good happy lives with those they love, of old age

That's how i had John Irons, Lana Lang and Pete Ross die. It is possible that is how Zod died as well. But for the rest they die as they lived in heroic or zany ways.

There are plenty of great endings to these characters, but my favorite is "To be continued..."

Ugh. No. In my opinion, that's a very bad and unhappy ending for a lot of characters.

For me, the best ending for Superman and his supporting cast was Superman #162, the famous Superman blue / Superman red story, written by Leo Dorfman with art by Curt Swan and Kurt Schaffenberger.

Something similar to Whatever happened to the Man of Tomorrow? except without the deaths of so many characters. I mean the ending is great for Superman and Lois but...
    Power with Girl is better.

I tend to think happy endings are overly done.. It's better sweet goodbye with hope for tomorrow .Superman has tragedy built-in.So yeah! that's my ending for Clark's journey. His admission that superman is an overrated concept is peak self realisation and reflection

Superman: After fighting the best and beating the best and living through several galactic scale crises. Superman retires out to Smallvile. Becomes a farmer and carpenter. Feeding the needy and building houses for the homeless.

Lois Lane: With newspapers going the way of the dinosaur. Lois works hard to make the joint company of the Daily Planet and Galaxy TV one of the top media empires on the planet. Perry White retires and Morgan Edge is dead. His ties to Darkseid exposed years ago.

Jimmy Olsen: Jimmy joins the Metropolis PD and continues to serve the city.

Supergirl: To the 31st Century with Brainiac 5 and the Legion.

Superboy/Connor: Lives a dual life as Superman and CEO of Lexcorp. As Lex has no heir, everything was left to Connor when he died.

Steel: John Henry Irons joined Star Labs and continues to come up with new patents and inventions to better serve the world. He reaches back and helps other disadvantaged kids get out of the Suicide Slum.

Lana Lang & Pete Ross: Lana came back to Smallville, married Pete Ross (who never left Smallville) and they opened a fashion center in town. Smallville being famous for being the home of Superman and a major transit spot on the way to Metropolis now.

Lex Luthor: Dies valiantly in the defense of Earth. Plenty of world ending events out there, choose your own adventure.

Brainiac: Brainiac 1 and Superman finally bury the hatchet. Brainaic 1's program reached the end of his life cycle after a final battle with Superman. His son, Brainiac 2 and Lobo continued their adventures throughout the galaxy.

Bizarro: Expired like the rest of the failed Superman clones.

Zod: Hand crushed and thrown down a bottomless cavern - Superman 2, Phantom Zone forever - Earth One and Pre-Flashpoint Zod, Kryptonite Poisoning - Pocket Earth, Slams into Superman and dies - Russian Zod, Blown up by Jor-El - Return to Krypton, Sucked into Phantom Zone Black Hole - For Tomorrow, Broken Neck - Man of Steel, Shot by Alexandra Luthor - Earth-1 JMS

Anybody have ideas for a happy ending for Zod? Dude is punked and punished at levels rivaled only by Bowser (Mario) and Ganon (Zelda).

Clark finally gets to be semi-retired and happy with Lois, only coming out in dire situations, because he can trust that Jon, Conner, Kara, and Natasha Irons will be there to save the day and Metropolis in his stead.

Jimmy Olsen used his money and inhertence to keep the Daily Planet stable, maybe growing it into a multimedia news organization. Once Perry White passes away, because unfortunately he's older then everyone, Jimmy, Lois, and Clark would likely dedicate the Daily Planet Organization to him.

Zod I guess can continue to establish a new Krypton
