Completely agree with this. Percy's Wolverine has been solid. If you're not a Logan fan, sure, not for you. But it's been good for fans of the character. And X-Force started off very strong, then fizzed out and got boring and bogged down with the plant people plot dragging on for too damn long. But I still enjoy both of his books over anything I've read from Howard. And Duggan has been pretty damn bad in some spots too. Very hit or miss, with honestly more miss in my opinion. And those misses have been worse than anything from Percy. Again, at least IMO. So while it's cool to drag him on here, he's not the worst writer on these books. Not even close. And I haven't even touched Vita yet, or whoever writes New Mutants which I abandoned months and months ago for being incomprehensible and boring AF.
Now that Wells and to a lesser extent Hickman are gone, I'd say Vita Ayala is the best writer in the X-office currently. We'll see what happens when Gillen comes in. There is no book that had been written with more respect for continuity and the characters' history relationships with each other than New Mutants has been since Ayala took over, and that goes a long way.
Everything looks interesting except for X-force and Wolverine.
Happy to see Kylun's return. And new Destiny Diaries!!
With Hickman gone, Ewing is the writer I've got the most faith in along with probably Gillen. And I don't really get the love for the Vita honestly. Nothing she's done has been very exciting. So while she may respect continuity and characters' relationships, and I know lots of folks around here value that over anything, the book just bores me. Maybe because I just can't bring myself to care about the cast or the plot. But for those who enjoy it, more power to them. I feel like there's probably very little overlap between those who are big Wolverine fans and those who love Vita's New Mutants. Like, in a Venn diagram, literally no intersectionality. But I could be wrong. Not gonna spend to much time caring or thinking about it either way. Ha.
What can I say? I'm loyal like that. Wolverine and Cable are my dudes.
Here's my X-book pull list for May...
Wolverine - This looks fun and has Adam Kubert drawing, plus Deadpool and Danger; an easy purchase
X-Force - While I'm not too keen on this sentient Cerebro plot, I love the cast and Cassara's art so am staying on this title; I also really love the concept of being the mutant CIA, but wish Percy would lean into that in the actual execution; make it more world-spanning like Spurrier's (criminally underrated) X-Force run where they were also acting as a mutant CIA, taking on threats to mutant sovereignty (prior to Krakoa mind you) in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, etc.; in other words, really acting as a mutant CIA and dealing with external threats and not just internal ones
X-men Red - Ewing, Caselli and Cable in this book makes it a must buy for me
X-men - Sticking with this one for the art really, as Larraz is just that damn good; he makes it worth the price even if Duggan's writing is subpar IMO
Immortal X-men - Interesting concept and I think Gillen is a pretty capable writer, so I'm giving this one a shot
That's about it for me. Unless I hear good things about any of the other books. Might check out Legion of X because I like the cast and did enjoy Spurrier on X-Force, as mentioned.
