So does the Gwen clone (in issue #149 I believe), after realizing she's a clone, just says goodbye to Peter, hops in a cab and just disappears from the comics for over a decade?

She's a Mutant now or something like that. Or did she die during the second Clone Saga? Wait, that was a different Gwen clone. Hmm...
"The Enigma Force is not a tool to be manipulated by mortals. The Enigma Force comes to those it deems worthy. What temerity, what arrogance, makes you think you are worthy? Have you not all made mistakes? Unforgiveable ones?" - Captain Universe
"Call me an Avenging Angel, Baron, come to safeguard Earth...call me CAPTAIN UNIVERSE!" - Ray Coffin
"You're my heart, Mary Jane Watson...you're my jackpot." - Peter Parker
"He's pure power and doesn't even know it. He's the best of us."-Matt Murdock
"I need a reason to take the mask off."-Peter Parker
"My heart half-breaks at how easy it is to lie to him. It breaks all the way when he believes me without question." Felicia Hardy
And it was Gerry Conway who brought her back after writing her out.
She hops in a cab in 1975, drives away till 1988.
Then she wanders off and isn't seen again till 1995.
Then she wanders off after Maximum Clonage for 15 years.
Then she's shot and killed in 2011.
Despite all the faceless Gwen clones (including Abby-L, the photo-Gwen Clone who killed her), "Joyce" is the MAIN Gwen clone, the Ben to Peter, so to speak.
Such a pivotal character deserves a return!
"Face Front... Nuff Said?"
That original clone is dead. But we have the mutant Gwen Warren clone now.
While I enjoyed the bit, the 1988 appearance was a bizarre part of crossover called the Evolutionary Wars, in which "Gwen" was captured by the High Evolutionary in a bid to understand how Miles Warren was able to create clones.
High Evolutionary has a journal of Warren's, who used to study/serve under the High Evolutionary, in which it is explained that he never cloned anyone, but was actually mutating existing people into other people.
Because that's less ridiculous than actual cloning, somehow.
Clone Gwen was, in fact*, a student called Joyce Delaney. She was ultimately mutated back to Joyce Delaney with her memories returned.
This was immediately retconned in the 1995 Clone Saga (although Miles may or may not have mutated himself into a Jackal-Man for that Clone Saga or, as the title suggests, it could have just been another clone).
*Not a fact.
"Has Sariel summoned you here, Azrael? Have you come to witness the miracle of your brethren arriving on Earth?"
"I WILL MIX THE ASHES OF YOUR BONES WITH SALT AND USE THEM TO ENSURE THE EARTH THE TEMPLARS TILLED NEVER BEARS FRUIT AGAIN!"
"*sigh* I hoped it was for the miracle."
Dan Watters' Azrael was incredible, a constant delight and perhaps too good for this world (but not the Forth). For the love of St. Dumas, DC, give us more!!!
For that retcon I believe the Peter clone (Ben) was actually a mutated Anthony Serba, the man Miles Warren killed (or "killed") after he discovered Miles was cloning people (or mutating, as per the retcon).
The whole concept was a complete mess, far more so than it just being clones.
But to be clear, the Clone Saga a few years later revealed all that mutating existing people stuff to be lies and Miles did actually create the clones of Gwen and Peter (who became Ben).
It's so interesting to me that over a decade after the relatively short lived original Clone Saga all this was brought up and attempted to be retconned in an annual-based crossover. Written by Gerry Conway, no less!

Wow. Thanks. It definitely sounds like a mess. lol. Retcons on Retcons.
And I generally like Gerry's stories.
It being in an annual is probably why I never heard of it. I only have a handful of annuals in my collection because of the habit of stories continuing across them(at least back in the day).
