The problem is classic looks change. For me, classic Cyclops was from the 90's cartoon. Before, classic Cyclops was blue/black and yellow like all the other X-Men. Soon, classic cyclops will probably be thought of as the John Cassaday Astonishing era Cyclops or Chris Bachalo's Cyclop. What you consider a classic now is rarely the same that is considered classic before, and any argument you make for your classic character someone else can make for theirs, which imo is the reason not to stick with classic costumes. If you've got a series of costumes so good that multiple people can consider different costumes "classic" then you're not doing a bad thing.
