The Rebirth version was also just as terrible. Even the tattoo doesn't do her any favours

For Diana:
Best: I would have to give a tie for the best to her Rebirth/DCEU costumes (which are essentially the same design), and her 82-86 Bronze Age swimsuit look.
I love the asthetic of Diana in Greco-inspired Amazonian armor. I wish artists were more consistent with the smaller details, such as the tiara, chest eagle, and lasso placement, but when done right it's just become such a beautiful and iconic image.
And I grew up seeing that Bronze Age costume on her covers as a kid. It was just so simple and classic, red top, golden W bird, golden belt, point up, modestly cut blue, star-spangled shorts, red pointed boots with connected white stripe accross the top and down the shin. It was so simple, and was pretty consistently drawn the same way, accross all of Diana's appearences outside her own book, as few as those were.
Worst: For me, the worst looks are any 90s "bad girl" looks. The thong, the black bra/shorts... It was a lot. I was actively buying comics at that point, and it felt so out of hand, even then. When John Byrne took over, his busy-fied version of her more classic look was a welcome change for 13 year old me, even though I never understood why the lasso became a glowing black string. Lol. And a special mention for the worst category has to go to anytime Jim Lee draws her top as BARELY covering her breasts. If he drew her with less.... AMPLE bosoms, maybe it wouldn't be so distracting. I have ZERO issue with women wearing as much or as little as they choose, but practically speaking, his WW would have flashed a LOT of villains.
I will post later on best and worst for the other Wonders later. Thanks for this thread, it's fun!
Peace and love to ALL!
Ray

I think the poster is more talking about artist depictions such as Adam Hughes and Carlos Pacheco. In those renditions, the details of her armor--or even the fact that the suit IS armour--get completely lost because there isn't enough real estate to incorporate them. Her classic suit is my favorite when drawn absent a Skinemax After Dark cheeky intent. I love the bold details of the armour and the way the emblem wraps. But on Pacheco and and AHs the top's cups are barely training bra size and the artist has given her double Ds.

Exactly! Compare the Lee, Pacheco, and AH renditions to these by Reis, Perez, and Byrne

I don't think there was anything wrong with the basic costume although I could do without the Heinberg/Dodson era embellishments like the Suicide belt and moonboot soles. The intent and spirit of the artist are the issue. Note that when AH! draws Superman covers the cheekiness is completely absent. We don't see oversized crotches, genital imprints, needless nipple details or bizarre peek-a-boo moments. I love AHs color work, textures, and lighting and often lament how he didn't give himself enough real estate to really make the armor details sing.
Best: Bronze Age outfit. This video explains why perfectly:

Short version, she's supposed to embody the beauty of Aphrodite, goddess of erotic love. The whole point of her character is to show that woman can be strong and powerful without losing their femininity. Obviously feminine beauty does not need to be sexual; there is a huge difference between femininity and sexuality and beauty comes in many forms. But WW should have a hint of sexuality because again, Aphrodite. I know Marton had his issues but he got a lot of stuff right and that should not be dismissed. Also it should invoke the American flag (including stars on the briefs) because she's supposed to be an ambassador. Her costume is meant to reflect the common values and ideals that the USA shares with ancient Greece.
Worst- anything that looks like armour. WW is supposed to be a peacemaker, someone defined by her compassion and understanding. Wearing armour all the time as her default appearance implies that she believes violence is inevitable. That is completely at odds with what she is meant to be.
Quote: "Wonder Woman does not come to America covered in armour, shielding herself and with a sword ready to attack. She comes in a costume that reveals herself to the outside world. She has nothing to hide."
All excellent points!
And AH! is a technically AMAZING artist. His version of Gal Gadot's DCEU WW costume is IMO a great reminder of how brilliant he can be (not that we needed any reminder!)
Merciful Minerva! That ^^^outfit is to die for! Michael Wilkinson (BVS's costume designer) understood the assignment & slayed.
If we can expand to villains, I will never NOT stan the amazingly creepy, amazingly striking looks Alex Ross gave Priscilla Rich (this is my all-time favorite Cheetah, visually and conceptually):
