As for tone, definitely not Snyder. "Superman and Lois" is a pretty good idea for tone, but I'd like to see something that's more like the first WW film - serious enough, but knows how to have fun and has a LOT of it. And absolutely full-on with the power fantasy side. It needs to be enjoyable.
This movies should be fun. Not dour like the DC movies before it. I compare it to the Home series cause I feel the Superman movies should have that tone.

Curious what people think would be a good LoSH cast and villain for a first movie with Superman.
Didn't mean to ignore you, I didn't read the entire thread.

I actually like the idea of using the Legion. It'd fit nicely with my own idea of doing an animated theatrical "science fantasy adventure" thing with exotic locations. I think you could take the story of Valor/Mon-El and work it into a loose adaptation of Superman & the Legion and end up with a quality film. Use Clark and Gar's dynamic as the emotional heart of the story, reflect the theme of brotherhood through the Legion for different perspectives, with Earth Man as the external threat whose goals parallel the troubles between Clark and his estranged brother.

It's a side of Superman I don't think people have seen outside of the comic shop, and the Legion is a rarely used tool in the mythos so it'd still feel fairly fresh.

But as far as casting goes, I have no idea. I don't watch enough tv to even have a good guess. I know that I'd reduce the size of the Legion to about a dozen, with only four or five getting a solid amount of screen time (Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad, Saturn Girl, Valor, and Brainy).

Yes, that's what I'm trying to say, exactly. In my head, intentionally leaving a few loose ends is part of focusing on the movie in front of you...but that doesn't exactly make sense when you say it out loud. Thank the gods some of you are fluent in Ascended, because my words don't always match my thoughts.

As for flying, I'd say leaping for 2/3rds of the film, and in the 3rd/4th act he's desperate to get to where he needs to be and leaps so hard his eyes close and then he... just stops falling.
I like the idea, we've seen that a few times and it's always cool. But I wonder....do we *need* flying? It works as a great metaphor for a lot of things and it's a staple of the character....but does a OG Superman *need* to fly? I think it'd work for a film but if you were doing a Golden Age flavored tv series it might be best to leave the powers at their original factory setting. At least until the final season?

I very much like this general idea. If I had to pick four words that I want to describe Superman in the next films, it's "sheer force of will". He's generally pretty on target in his estimations, and he's got enough oomph to "power" his way through the rest that he relies on that. Not too reckless, but not holding back (at least not in the first film) and that doesn't always work in his favor (though he's excellent at recovering, generally). And I'm good with him juggling bad guys, Fleischer-style: he doesn't need to intimidate the way Batman does, he can do it on a whole other level. "If you soil yourself again, I'll drop you" would be a fun line.
There's a scene in some Justice League book, or maybe it was a show, where a meteor is about to hit the earth and there's no time for Batman or Cyborg or whoever to calculate where it needs to be broken up so the pieces don't hit the planet. And Clark just says "I'm eye balling it" and flies into space, where of course he punches the meteor in just the right spot, it shatters, and all the pieces fly wide of earth. That's the kind of confidence and recklessness I like to see from Superman. Arrogant and even cocky, but so competent and able his confidence is entirely earned. The man needs some serious swagger. He just can't be a dick about it.

Also might I add we avoid having Lois Lane as the love interest at the begging and use someone new(Lana, ect) ir have no romantic love interests at all and focus on developing Superman.
If I was soft rebooting Cavill I would do something like this. Kill Adams Lois, kill Eisenberg Lex, completely torch the foundation and send Superman to Warworld where he meets Maxima and they team up to fight Mongul. But for “regular” Superman I don’t see the problem with using Lois, Reeves used Catwoman as Batman’s LI again after all. Although I wouldn’t have Clark and Lois together in the first movie, I’d make it clear the two are on the path to getting together.

Idk...seems way to drastic but maybe that's what Superman needs man. That's what Marvel did with Thor in Thor Ragnarok. I think that's a good idea. And yeah I wouldn't have Lois and Clark be a couple in the first movie. Just co workers or allies.

They need to bring back the Reeves era Superman theme, or, if that is not available for some reason, use the old Lois and Clark (The Dean Cain/Terri Hatcher show- not to be confused with Superman and Lois) theme. If they can't get either, write a new one with a similar feel.

I seriously think that is what the Cavill Superman movies were missing. Biggest thing. For me it's a conscious thing, but I think there is a much larger group for whom it's subconscious- it just doesn't feel like Superman without some sort of audio component featured really prominently, and even people who barely realize that Superman doesn't have a theme feel like it's not him for some reason they can't quite put their finger on or potentially misidentify as they are groping for something about the plot or the costume or something to justify their feelings.

No origin story. Clark Kent works at the Daily Planet with Lois, who he likes romantically, but is not dating, Jimmy, who is a bit older than usual and is Clark's hard drinking friend who he goes out with at night, and a cigar chain-smoking Perry White. Clark doesn't have children and the subject of his human parents never come up during any of the movies unless absolutely necessary, and, even then, they aren't seen.

As Superman, he fights for "truth, justice, and democracy". We see a Superman who broods more, but not due to uncertainty, because he seethes with anger (This has to be handled very carefully, because it can't even touch on teasing a heel turn or an injustice kind of story to come, which is not where I'd go with this). He's 27ish, so a younger Superman, but established. He fights for social justice at home, confronting corrupt billionaires and standing up for the economically and racially oppressed. Abroad, he refuses to be seen as an instrument of US foreign policy, but considers himself a defender of democracy, which in his fictional movie universe sometimes aligns with what the US is doing and sometimes does not.

I might consider opening the first movie with an obvious stand-in for the Russia invasion of Ukraine. Superman flies in and basically kicks Russia's (or whatever fictional country is used as a stand-in) ass while his theme music plays throughout. Then they cut to a press conference where he is awarded a metal and shakes Ukraine's (or it's fictional stand-in) President's hand, saying "I did what I could. It's up to you and the people of your great country to do the truly hard work of rebuilding and making this the best country it can be. Good luck, Mr. President. I know this country is in good hands.". It's implied that Superman preserves the international order in cases of grave injustice, and promotes democracy, but isn't interested in actually running countries or getting involved in nuanced conflicts, and isn't going to do anything like pursuing Russia back over it's border or attempting regime change.

Perhaps right after the press conference, Superman has to fly back to the United States where a BLM protest (Or some generic protest that is clearly oriented around racial justice, economic justice, or protecting human rights) is taking place and the police are about to get violent, and Superman shows up to huge cheers from the crowd and chains himself together with them ala the New52 Truth arc to even bigger cheers, his eyes glow red with smoke come off of them, and the police back off without Superman really doing anything but showing up. The police don't want a fight with Superman.

He starts to go through the air and in mid-air says "Ah crap, I haven't even started my piece on the east side slumlords. Perry is going to kill me." and we start seeing his life as Clark Kent. From there, we move into whatever the superhero movie plot is going to be, and it's something inspiring, but not corny- a bit less gritty maybe than the Synder movies, but much less cheesy than the Reeves movies.

The ideal costume for my preferences would be the New52 Superman Kryptonian body armor look (Though possibly made of earth fabrics and not real armor), but I think the Cavill costume or really any reasonable variation on the Superman costume would be fine (The look I prefer might be seen as having baggage for a series of movies in a new continuity.). It would not have trunks, but it would have a cape.

Though the opening of the first film would show Superman first fighting an army and then peacefully protecting a protest group elsewhere, showing that he can fight when he needs to and can also use soft power and his reputation to avoid needing to fight to do what he does, overall in the movies, I would just happen to show Superman flying around punching people a lot. I think Superman is best as an action character.

I also would have both Clark and Superman crack the occasional joke, with Superman mostly using dry human and sarcasm, and Clark's jokes being more cheesy and/or dad-jokes. Again, as with the anger, they shouldn't go overboard with this and turn it into a Marvel movie, I just don't think Superman has to be completely humorless.

Another alternate idea is to do a Superman-noir film that's set in the 1930s, 40s, or 50s (Not doing WW2, though) and features the all the traditional costumes, men with hats, phone booths, Superman verbal cliches, and so on and so forth, but in an R-rated world with R-rated characters. It could even be done in black and white, or have a theatrical release in color, but a black and white option for streaming, DVD, and Blue-Ray. This would obviously not have the same potential for crossovers as the first idea would, and would probably be a one-off rather than introducing the new movie-verse Superman.

So here's my take, inspired largely by Morrison's Action Comics run, along with the original Siegal/Shuster stories, the Fleischer cartoons and STAS.

We start with an extended pre-credits scene, which begins with a guy in a hoodie walking to a printers, showing him a sketch of the familiar S symbol and asking him to print it on a blue shirt. The next scene is intrepid reporter Lois Lane undercover at a night-club, trying to get dope on a corrupt local politician who's working with a gangster. She's found out and they abduct her and take her to a green car...which is then stopped by a man in a costume (the suit is basically the Siegal/Shuster suit with the symbol from the Fleischer cartoons...but it looks very makeshift, like something put together manually), who rescues Lois, gets the crooks out of the car, and then smashes it up with his bare hands. Later at the Daily Planet, Lois is talking about her ordeal to Perry White and a bunch of other reporters, some of whom are skeptical. Lois strikes up a conversation with Clark Kent, who's just joined the newspaper. He asks her what she's going to call the mystery man once she writers an article about him, and she says that because of the S and what he can do she'll call him ''Superman''. Clark, secretely, is a bit taken aback but looks happy about it.

At this point we get the titles (either just the title or an opening credits sequence which will highlight news reports and footage of Superman's actions all over Metropolis). We then jump forward to six months later. Superman has become a familiar figure in Metropolis, though there are few decent photos of him and he's still a mystery-man. He's also a controversial figure - denounced by some as a vigilante, a 'freak' and a menace, while others admire his ability to use brute force to solve problems that the authorities can't. We get to see Superman's usual MO - Clark investigates a story about a tenemant that's been constructed with substandard materials due to municipal corruption and is a massive health hazard. As Superman, he goes, evacuates the slum, and demolishes it single-handedly, forcing government intervention. We also snippets of some of his other activities - stopping armed robberies, beating up a wife-beater, smashing up a drunk-drivers car etc. There are political debates about him in the media and the Metropolis PD has been ordered to form a task force to hunt him down, though many cops secretely admire him, not least Inspector Henderson and his right-hand woman Maggie Sawyer. In the meantime, we see Clark going about his daily life, working at the Daily Planet but always in Lois' shadow - developing a crush on her and admiring her spunk and determination and amused (and a bit frustrated) to realize she's infatuated with Superman. We also see that he has dreams about an alien world under attack.

The US military, specifically Lois' dad General Sam Lane hires renowned scientist Lex Luthor to investigate Superman, since the military suspects that he might be an alien. We learn that the military has the pod that brought Superman to earth, which we're told was discovered in Kansas ''over 20 years ago''. Lex has been hired to investigate if Superman has any connection to the alien pod.

Superman fights a giant robot causing trouble in Metropolis. It's his first real challenge but he's able to destroy it. The robot was deployed by Luthor and was a test to gauge Superman's power levels and also map his DNA against samples taken from the rocket, which confirm that Superman came to earth in the rocket. Luthor also tests the alien cells against a small glowing green rock he found embedded in the exterior of the rocket and notices that it causes the cells to degrade...he theorizes that the rock is a weapon that can be used to weaken and even kill Superman. So he develops a battlesuit, powered by the radiation from the mineral, which Sam Lane's hotshot and xenophobic subordinate John Corben is chosen to pilot.

Lois, in the meantime, who has a stormy meeting with her dad, confides in Clark that her sources say that her dad is in Metropolis working with Luthor and apparently has an alien ship in his possession. This leads Clark to have a flashback to when he was a teenager, and his adoptive parents told him about how they found him in a rocket, swaddled in the red blanket (which became his cape). They were just about able to get him and the cape from the rocket before the military showed up. Clark heads back to Smallville and meets his parents. He confides his fears that the world may soon find out that he's an alien and that they'll reject him, while his parents try to reassure him.

Clark heads back to Metropolis when he hears sightings of another 'robot'. It's Corben, wearing the ''Metallo'' suit, who manages to defeat Superman in combat, captures him, and takes him to the secret base where Luthor and Sam Lane are. Luthor is able to experiment further on Superman, harvesting more of his DNA and his biometrics, which enables him greater access to the ship. Under the influence of the torture from the kryptonite, Superman has more fragmented memories surface of an attack on his homeworld, Krypton and of his parents, Jor-El and Lara, putting him in the ship.

Unknown to Luthor, his activating the ship's systems alerts Brainiac out in deep-space that the ''last Kryptonian'' is on earth. This triggers an invasion of earth. As Brainiac's drones attack the military base, Superman is able to escape. Instead of running away however he fight and destroys some of the drones, saving some of the soldiers there, as well as Lois (who had arrived at the base earlier suspecting that her dad had something to do with Superman's abduction). However Superman is no match for Brainiac's more powerful and aerial drones (his power is at Siegal/Shuster levels...though he's steadily becoming more powerful at this point he still can't fly). Metallo attempts to fight some drones but is seemingly killed. Superman also recognizes the drones and the tech as being what attacked his home planet in his vague memories from his infancy.

Brainiac demands Superman in return for sparing the earth. Lane and Luthor are ready to hand him over but have no means to do so since Metallo is 'dead'. Superman however agrees to surrender himself, not because he believed Brainiac but because he feels the best chance of fighting Brainiac is within his ship. Lois insists on going with him and stows away on the ship sent to retrieve Superman. Brainiac and Superman come face to face, after Superman is restrained and weakened due to Brainiac replicating Krypton's atmospheric conditions. Brainiac explains his own origins to Superman - he's an alien intelligence from the planet Colu who crashed on Krypton and was discovered by Jor-El. He allowed Jor-El to believe that he'd 'invented' him and over the years steadily infilitrated Krypton's information systems, its politics and every aspect of its society. Brainiac gathered all the intelligence that it could on Krypton, and then triggered its destruction. Jor-El discovered Krypton's impending doom but Brainiac ensured that he would be discredited. However, Jor-El, not trusting Brainiac, had secretely developed a rocket to send his infant son Kal-El to earth, even as Brainiac's forces launched an attack on Krypton to prevent anyone else from escaping. Brainiac mentions how this is his standard MO - studying a planet, gathering date of its collective knowledge, and then eliminating it, which he's about to do to earth (since its a primitive planet and he can do with it what he took years to do on Krypton). Brainiac taunts Superman, claiming that in earth's atmosphere and under its yellow sun, Superman should have the powers of a God, yet he restrains himself, using only a fraction of his powers to intervene in ''petty concerns'', afraid of showing his true alien nature.

Lois is able to free Superman and he's able to disable the controls to restore earth's atmosphere to Brainiac's ship regaining his powers and takes down several of Brainiac's drones within the ship, though his costume is damaged. He finds an old Kryptonian relic in Brainiac's ship, a battlesuit that can be 'reformatted' based on the wearer's thoughts, so he puts it on and it transforms into a new suit (which resembles the Rebirth suit from the comics). Superman, finally unleashing his full power, is able to destroy Brainiac's fleet threatening the earth, as well as his ship. Brainiac, before he is destroyed, reveals that he's merely a drone and that there are dozens of him out there in deep-space.

In the aftermath, Superman is hailed as a hero almost universally for the first time. He finally gives Lois an interview, revealing the full story of his alien heritage, which he's now learnt from Brainiac, to the world. We see him tell Jonathan and Martha on the farm that while he'll always be Clark Kent, there's now a whole other side to his life that he needs to explore and make a part of him. He retrieves his rocket from the military which he takes to a cavern in the Arctic where he's retrieved other alien technology from the wreck of Braniac's ship and his forces and is slowly building the Fortress of Solitude. He activates the ships system and meets the holographic recording of Jor-El and Lara for the first time, ready to embrace his alien identity. But he's gained a boost in confidence as Clark Kent as well, as he asks her out.

A post-credit scene reveals that Luthor retrieved some of the alien tech as well, and he's recovered the comatose and badly damaged body of John Corben, intent on transplanting his brain to a new kryptonite powered cyborg body...

PS: Apologies for the long post...got a bit carried away, lol
    No problem, it was awesome.

I agree that the Kegion of Superheroes is the way forward, jone in on the idea of Superman being a builder, by showing a group of young fresh characters that come to show what he will do for mankind. Kind of like a reverse Truth Justice and the American Way.

And maybe meege this with the T-shirt and cape era. At the beginning of the movie Clark has been living as a reporter, and the first act is when he puts on the cape and becomes a trust buster, he is dismantly something. And then the Legion appear, a way more sophisticated form of superhero.

Heck, Braniac could be the villain just like in the actual Grant Morrison run, but the real suit doesn't come from him, it comes from the Legion.

I don't think the Legion would work. Unless we limit it to 3 of them. And they don't show up until after Morrison's first arc. Also we need to start fresh. No John Williams theme sorry.

I think it is hard to improve on John Williams.
I'm not sure what the sound would be, if it is not the triumphal orchestra.
I would be curious to know?

Agreed on "not dour" - maybe I should be more clear, WW with a HEAVY dose of Fleischer.

It's all good! It may be that, or just that I feel the same way. Heck, it's the best of the Triangle Era, really - tell a solid one-issue story that leaves pieces for larger arcs, so it works both ways. In my mind, only part 2 should be a cliffhanger of sorts.

I like the idea, we've seen that a few times and it's always cool. But I wonder....do we *need* flying? I don't think we "need" it, per se, but it's expected. Funny enough on that point, my original idea is that there's a massive bomb above Metropolis and Superman has been distracted by little problems and has to get all the way back, and we get the joy of flying just before he realizes he can't stop and plows right *through* the bomb (in mid-air, so everyone is safe) and he's knocked out cold and his suit in tatters. In my head, it almost looks like something out of Looney Tunes at first. So the first controlled flight we see is literally at the end of the film when he's recovered and in the new suit, setting up the 2nd movie's "Silver Age in space" theme. If we don't get a 2nd film, it just looks like we end on a classic note.

There's a scene in some Justice League book, or maybe it was a show, where a meteor is about to hit the earth and there's no time for Batman or Cyborg or whoever to calculate where it needs to be broken up so the pieces don't hit the planet. Absolutely. "I'm eyeballing it" is so perfectly confident yet still has a folksy-ness to it that I love it.

I like this in general, but I'd go further back. There's such a triumph to the Fleischer theme that I think it could be updated VERY slightly and be perfect for a modern tone.

I'd just say "truth and justice", keeping with Flesicher. And the anger thing isn't bad at all - I have a few ideas on how that could be handled to show that it's him caring about the suffering of others so much that seeing them hurt pisses him off.

This would obviously not have the same potential for crossovers as the first idea would, and would probably be a one-off rather than introducing the new movie-verse Superman.
That's not a bad idea, either. I don't think R-rated is necessary, as I do think we need to go for "the kids" again, but it could certainly be a good take!

I prefer Superboy as a debut simply because I just don't see Clark as someone who can stand aside once his powers emerge and I never cared for the idea Kryptonian powers emerge later in life. But I'd try to work out something like his using his powers covertly for a few years so his debut was in Metropolis and after his 18th birthday at the earliest.

The decision to be Superman needs to be Clark's not the result of fulfilling the Kent's expectations or a holographic message from Jor-El/Lara. He isn't here with a mission, he's here doing what comes naturally to him. While it might require some sacrifices on his art, being Superman shouldn't be seen as a burden he carries. No "I just want to be a regular Joe with everyday problems" or "I have to save everyone so i can never have a moment to myself".

I'd want the movie to be a debut of Superman, but not an origin. We don't see Krypton or hear it's name. We meet a Clark who is already aware of his powers. This isn't a hero's journey where we see him becoming Superman. This is a story about a man who changes the world rather than is changed by it. Superman from the first scene is pretty much the Superman at the end of the film. It's people like Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, James Olsen ... and how they change because of Superman.
How early are you thinking for Superboy? Like John Haynes/Gerard Christopher Superboy age? Or OG Billy Batson little kid age?

Everything just seemed so natural there, from the flow of the story, to the chemistry, to certain character beats, etc. Even Supes wearing his underwear on the outside of his costume didn't seem that odd. And let's not forget that crest with the black background. That has to be the most beautiful Superman suit I've ever seen in live action.
Tyler's Superman is the best live action Superman we have ever had. I think Reeves would be proud were he around to witness it

Completely against bringing back any of the old Superman themes. You can’t keep looking backwards with Superman, you gotta do a clean reboot like what Batman is getting.
